So maybe all of the "truly gifted" can move away to a land for the "truly gifted" and invite anyone who wants to see and review "truly gifted" work can go with them and write truly relevant reviews. Geez folks. When did this bitterness seep in? If your work is truly important to you, do it. Let it stand or fall. You don't need to clear the field.

Dear Tommy Wayne's rant on Ukiah and the arts makes the evil side of me laugh, but I must emphasize that his commentary is not very healthy for the community or his reputation (or the UDJ's). Perhaps this is precisely what a rant does: evoke raw emotion without much temperance.
If I had had this brand of feedback on my written craft, I'd have crawled back into the "hippie" hovel from whence I came 35 years ago--as my family were pioneers in Mendocino County--probably the only then hippies with life insurance and a sports car.
I love the Ukiah community, with all of the quirky idiosyncrasies. Being a small fish in a big pond suits me, though, as life has called me elsewhere to practice my art.

Great piece of writing. I hope to see much more from Tommy Wayne Kramer. Yes, Mendocino County is about as significant as a ball of lint in a bum’s butt crack.

Where is the editor in charge? I can't believe this was allowed to be published in our paper. Shame on you, your article is repulsive.

So true. Same bunch of people performing at the Ukiah Players.-- SPACE is a glorified day-care facility. The awful truth is: if you are truly gifted as an artist or performer, you move away from Ukiah, and especially Willits, as quickly as humanly possible.
The term "gifted" has been worn out by SPACE and some of the more yuppified of our community. "Look at Billy..why, he's flatulent in 3 languages....he's GIFTED!"

Honey, this community is not very healthy. Mr, Kramer can't be blamed for that.

I disagree. The woman who did my portrait (my avatar) is quite talented, if you like the style of Freda Kahlo and can see it expressed (along with a healthy dose of anime) in her work. I've been watching her mature (she's quite young) into a fascinating creature:

I have also noticed over the past week the exquisite fabric mosaics hanging up at the MEC (across from the courthouse on Standley St.). While some are more plain, many of them are far more adept work than I saw last year in Texas' St. Fair's 'quilting' display with blue ribbons on them. You can see some of them (interspersed with less impressive items) in the panorama picture I took of it to test some software.

Ukiah theater/theater = hobby for people that a way to into themselves and to scared to try to do anything bigger where they might not be considered good and would actually have to hone their craft. Where they would actually have to compete with others and not be safe in the town they grew up in.

how bloody dare you! we are all artists. there is no standard but that which is set by the ancient cabal of flubberwhitzers. That group is long gone and so no standard remains to prevail or compare to. standards are for snotts. art is not supposed to make sense or have an impact beyond making us feel the way we feel when we do it, that which we do when we feel that way because we have done, or not done, what we wanted to do, or near about. so there. as long as ssdi holds out and the bastard cant evict me as he dont know we live here, then we are artists of merit. just like the academy awards...we WE we award ourselves the titles. statueless, but, phoooooot.

You are all faulty in the party. That is all what is wrong. No more fault lines, We cannot each be artists...some of you are just bums, drunx or mislabeled soecimens of lower life forms on the upwards creep.
