1 American Axle offer hinders deal Supplier proposes 3 more closings; Gettelfinger surprised ASSOCIATED PRESS • May 11, 2008 Read Comments(73)Recommend (1)Print this page E-mail this article Share this article: Del.icio.us Facebook Digg Reddit Newsvine What’s this? UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said Saturday he thought the union was close to a contract deal to end a strike against American Axle until the auto parts supplier offered a proposal that includes closing three plants. Gettelfinger told WWJ-AM (950) in Detroit that the latest proposal came as a surprise Friday. He said it included closing a facility in Cheektowaga, N.Y., in addition to two other closures that previously had been discussed. There had been hope for a settlement after General Motors Corp.'s surprise announcement Thursday that it will throw in $200 million to help end the 10-week walkout, which has crippled production of GM pickups and SUVs. But Gettelfinger said he hadn't wanted GM involved, and noted that the new offer came on the heels of GM's proposal. "I think it definitely made it worse, because now we're facing another closure," Gettelfinger said. He said the union planned to remain at the bargaining table through the weekend, but said, "I don't know where we're at because the company changes their position every time we turn around." American Axle spokeswoman Renee Rogers told the Associated Press that she could not comment on specifics of a proposal. She said talks continued Saturday and the company continues to seek a U.S. market-competitive labor agreement. "We have consistently offered proposals significantly higher than the agreement that our competitors have, because we want to end this," Rogers said. "And they have been consistently turned down by the UAW." GM spokesman Dan Flores declined to comment Saturday on the talks between the union and American Axle. But he said GM's $200-million offer was made with hope of helping to facilitate an agreement. A message seeking comment was left Saturday by the Associated Press for UAW spokesman Roger Kerson. About 3,600 UAW members went on strike Feb. 26 at the five plants in Michigan and New York in a dispute over wage and benefit cuts the company is seeking and failing to reach a new contract agreement. Union members previously said the company wanted to negotiate the closure of American Axle's Detroit and Tonawanda, N.Y., forge operations. Gettelfinger confirmed Saturday that those had been agreed upon. Detroit-based American Axle is a small company that gets 80% of business from GM, its former parent. It makes axles, driveshafts and stabilizer bars for pickups, such as the Chevrolet Silverado -- GM's top-selling vehicle. Many of its U.S. competitors won deals from the UAW to pay newly hired workers about $14 per hour. But American Axle workers say they won't take that big of a pay cut from a company that made $37 million last |

1 Ya, now he wants to close the last machining plant in Cheektowaga (suburb of Buffalo). Heard rumors that his son is intereted in buying the IDLE not closed Buffalo plant--wow the more rumors I hear the crazier the Dauch Family gets! I understand the GM offer will be accepted by Dauch but go to Mexico & Thailand. I hope GM refuses that offer if that is the case. We are okay--we knew the strike was coming and planned well ahead-stocked up on groceries, no major purchases, pay down charges but I know alot of younger families could not do that. The more games Dauch plays the worst Corporate America becomes in my mine: Exon Mobile and now AAM! |

1 Strikers wife....Happy Mothers Day to you also Yes Dauch is one nasty individual. Not sure about GM offer if it only good for settling things here in the US. Heard a rumor that Dauch son is nothing like his dad wants nothing to do with him. I don't know if this is the same son or not. One can only hope and pray for the best. |

1 I work as an electrician in Mpls. MN union #292. I have been doing this for 8 years. Before this I was a union drywall taper, honestly I wasn’t good at this and was there only 6 months. I don’t wish anything bad on anyone. But I do not support the strikers nor the UAW. I think you brought this on yourselves through poor, short sighted decisions from the union, which focused on greed instead of production efficiency. The union’s back is against the wall,“what are you going to do?” The sales and profits of the companies you work for are getting worse everyday. Letter # 775 asked “what have you done for the company to lake things better?” The person was asking “what are you doing to make the company more efficient or profitable?” Would the union ever say they could build the car with 10% fewer workers or agree to increase the production rate some? So the cost per car would be less, and the company would be more profitable. The union would never say this because it is not in there best interest to have fewer members. The union would never suggest this unless they had to. And if they had to, then they are being reactive. It is better to be proactive, the union should have changed their behavior 30 years ago. The union is not a young strong thug with a gang anymore, it is a middle aged, out of shape, in debt, fat man. Your gang members are not around to endlessly support you, and you’re to old and fat to muscle your way around!! People don’t need you, and worse they don’t want to be around your kind. Your reputation of a bar fighter thug is not appealing to anyone anymore. You are middle age, act mature. Instead of learning a new discipline,(efficiency and team building) the union has turned angry and bitter and yells at the young healthy people jogging on their sidewalk. Saying it is all their fault (us against them mentality). Who wants to support you when all you do is cause trouble? The images I talked about is shared by most of the population of the US. Change your behavior, and your image will change, and we will think of supporting you. We have a choice, we choose to buy a better car, for the same price, which is not built by you. True success of the union should be, if people had a choice they would “want” to be in a union “not” that they have to be in one. |

1 And this comes from someone that is a Union employee. So you are saying it was your choice to be in a Union. This can only make me wonder why you would choose to be in a Union feeling the way you do. Now I am just curious on what you have done for your company do keep the cost down so it could be past on to the costumers. Also does it mean since you are a Union Electrician we should be looking for none Union Electricians because the quality would be so much better and cheaper? As for greed I believe you have that wrong. Greed is what all of this CEO's are all about. What I see is that this workers want to keep what they have. They have made concessions after concessions have this CEO's done the same? I also would like to know how willing you would be in giving 50% of you wages up. |

1 Let's face it our troops shouldn't be in Iraq or Afganistan. Since there is no draft that was a decision they made thinking there would be no war, just college tuition. Then here comes the George W. agenda and they have to live with their right decisions and with their wrong ones. Personally I wouldn't allow my kids to fight in this war....it's pointless....being American has got nothing to do with this mess. Ask the parents who lost their kids....for what??? |

1 UAW workers don't need resumes--yet! Again, most are educated and had other careers before AAM--right now it is wait and see the buyouts, buydowns, then proceed to the resume or go back to what the degree is in--walk before you run!!! Oh ya, keep all options open--already been offered a job in his degree career but needs to stay out until the strike is over--too much time has been invested. Its not crying, its called sending a message to corporate america--keep the jobs here!! Oh anyone know why we have such an immigration problem with all the plants in Mexico??? They are coming here to work?? Is it because we love our freedoms and they want to be part of it?? or perhaps we make a better product because UAW workers are consciencious, intelligent workers--my suburban had over 260,000 miles when I traded it in!!!! |
