I've been following this thread for a while as I am a historian documenting the electric microcar industry that originated in Southern California from the late 1940s until the 70's. Others on this thread have quoted my Wikipedia entry and my blog on some of the history of companies like Autoette, Mobilette, Electric Shopper, Electric Sports Rider, Marketeer, etc.

It is interesting that in many ways history is repeating itself here. The municipal authorities want to make money off of this guy's business but they don't know how or what niche to put him in so they block economic development and free enterprise by stonewalling or over regulating. This behavior is what contributed to the demise of the original electric car companies in the area. Those companies, especially Autoette were pioneers of what we now call NEVs.

Over regulation at the State and Municipal level, nuisance lawsuits, and pressure from Big Three automotive interests eventually killed the business. If the public doesn't stand up and show support for these electric car businesses and other green enterprises the same thing will happen all over again.

As for Bellflower - They ought to be embarrassed. One of their native sons was the first veteran to receive an Autoette as a mobility vehicle with support from the Veterans Administration. In 1953 Jesse Underwood, a Pearl Harbor survivor who had sustained trauma during the attack, was able to get support from the VA to purchase a specially modified Autoette electric car. Jesse lived with his parents in Bellflower and they along with Royce Seevers, owner of the Autoette Co., helped Jesse get approval for the purchase. Check it out - Autoette is still the language used by the VA to identify electric mobility vehicles. By the way, I own Jesse's car and there are photos of it on my blog at http://autoette.blogspot.com .

If "Business Guy" reads this please contact me about your father's connections to the business.

We really do need to consider these carts if we are going to do anything about our air quality, some days a man can take a breath in this town!

I would like to keep this blog alive to test the waters. As of June 2013, Bellflower is up to their same bullshit and will not allow Electric Car Sales to occupy this location.
