I am interested in the concept of auto dealerships. Who invented the concept? When? What alternatives have been tried? Etc. Can anyone suggest a book or article on the subject? Thanks.

I'm interested in learning when auto dealers began taking used cars in trade. Seems before that one had to sell one's own car before he could buy a new one, Often the e car was parked at local gas station with a for sale sign or driven with
a sign in the back window. Seem at until dealers took trade-ins auto market was not very liquid. Could it be that taking trades was what ignited the mass auto market?
