renting auto dealer license

Have been following this thread for quiet a while and amazed that term RENTING or LEASING is still used after so many legitimate dealers have stated that it is completely illegal.
Although many still offer their licenses you can easily confirm with any state DMV/ MVD that it is in fact illegal and eventually they get in trouble for it.
I have been in business for over 10 years and still don't see any good resource for beginners to learn and start inexpensively.
If anyone is interested in having their own corporation, dealer license (used and salvage), dealer plate and someone to talk to about anything related to the business email me at: [email protected]
If enough serious people are interested I will consider helping in acquiring everything necessary.
Don't get me wrong, I will do this for a fee but after watching this thread for over 4 years, I can tell you that none of the people that offer to help give you the full story and you will only run into huge expenses after you pay them initial fee. Here is few examples: 1) for IN wholesale license you have to sell 120 cars a year otherwise you are not compliant and I have not seen any starting dealer sell more then 20 cars in their first year. 2) most states require dealer/business/shop insurance. Cheapest policy will run you around 2k. 3) Most states require Dealer Bond and cost depends on your credit history and will cost anywhere from $350 to 5k a year. 4) there is a lot more that you are not being told and I will do my best to explain and warn you well before you pay anyone.
Once again send emails to: [email protected] to inquire about possibility of getting your own license.

Not necessarily illegal. BUT you are held responsible for everything the buyer does. They can buy 20 cars and walk out without paying and the auction will come after you. And if they buy a car and drive out of the auction and cause an accident you will have some explaining to do to your insurance company, the insurance may deny the claim. Or if they buy a salvage car and try to sell it as a clean title car to a retail customer the customer will be coming to see you when they find out. Or if they sell a car that is titled to your dealership and don't collect and remit sales tax. Or keep records. It's not worth the risk and don't let these so called rental companies tell you any different.

If you want the easy way into the business and do not mind lots of headaches, worries, title delays, auction lockouts, possible civil and criminal penalties, and the risk or losing money through no fault on your part, then this way is for you.

The problem with ANY auto dealership structure where you are not the principal or a direct partner is the fact you hold little to no control over the business.

Most of these online "co-op" situations make a member no more than a salesperson action on behalf of the licensed dealer. Yes some will list you as a member of the corporation or LLC which makes it "legal" is some ways, but ultimately you have no true ownership rights to the business, or the vehicles you purchase with your money but titled in their name.

Another consideration is that unless you are paired with a dealership in your immediate area and state, you CANNOT sell retail to the public legally in any way, shape , or form. Almost all of the states in the U.S. have regulations that require retail sales to be conducted at the licensed place of business with some exceptions for "tent sales". This means posting a car on cragslist, or parking it for sale in some parking lot, constitutes a violation of state law if the selling dealer is not licensed in that sate and sales location. Most states have made it a crime even to offer a vehicle for sale under these same rules and the fines are the same either way.

If you plan to wholesale vehicles to other dealers for profit, then one of these "programs" can work in theory. The main problem is that many of these structures have many operators under one dealership. So if one person bids on a car at Manheim and does not pay, the whole dealership is shut down from buying until the vehicle in question is paid for. This cost time, money, and aggravation. Additionally if the vehicles are sold to other dealers, most payment is in the form of a check both roadside and at the auction. Most programs require the member to clear checks through the business bank before you receive your proceeds. I don't know about you but there is no way I would let some arbitrary third party have control over my money.
