I've got a few questions on getting the California's used car dealer license and hope that some of you guys may have experience in this. I just want to sell from home and do not want want to have to rent a place... I'm quite confused right now, not sure if I still need to get a seller's permit and city's business license if I just wanna sell from home, or perhaps sell through the internet. Also, if I want to use a nonficticious name for my business, do I still need to file a name statement to the county records department?

If I am REQUIRED to get a business license, I realize that they're going to check if I have the right to work here in the United States. What documents do I need to prove to the US Immigration and Naturalization Service office to show that I am legible to work here in the United States?

Basically, does anyone here have a California's used car dealer license that can help me ?!?!

Thanks a bunch!

Pete,

First off its nearly impossible to get a Retail license if you don't have an office and a display area (an area designed to park cars i.e; it can't be shared parking with other offices that may neighbor an office)

You might have already known that, assuming you knew that and you are planning on getting your wholesalers license and selling from home, you will need a sellers permit from the Board of Equalization, if you live in city limits I imagine you'll need a business license which will be a hassle. Most towns make you apply for a CUP Conditional Use Permit which costs about 3500 and up just to apply. I'm not sure about the fictitious name.

About the immigration and naturalization, I'm not sure what they need, I imagine your Social Security number? But I'm not sure,

Hopefully it helped!

You can't get a dealer license without getting a business location. DMV will not give you a dealer license if you are selling it out of your house. End of story. Furthermore, your house might not be zone to do that kind of business anyway. The cheapest way to go is rent a small office which the landlord gives you 2 parking spaces for display. Gotta make sure it will be approve by city/county too. Don't forget to go take your dealer license class too, which is a requirement.

You can get all of the application forms from the DMV website located at
http://www.dmv.ca.gov

You will also need to take a car dealer license class to obtain your car dealer license in california. I took my class with LA Dealer school.
Their website is

They helped me out alot with my questions.

File a police report for starters. File a report with the better business bureau. Most importantly contact your local media, newspapers, tv stations, bloggers, etc. They should jump all over a story like that.

Can a wholesaler sell a car to the public and does it cost extra to do so. What if the wholesaler decides to keep the car for himself. Does it cost more at the DMV to register the vehicle. California thanks matt

I believe every business in US needs business permit wherever you are even at home. That's already SOP.
