I am Ali Nasir from Maldives. Though I am a teacher by profession, I
have deep fascination about the sea organisms and I have learn t
pretty much about them and I always dream t of doing much in this
The Maldives is a country of many small islands surrounded by shallow
reef fronts sloping down the lagoons and seas. During my early days
between 15 and 18 years old in 1988, 1989, 1990, my living was
collecting sea cucumber and processing them for selling. those days,
in the Maldivian seas, there were many varieties of sea cucumbers
easily available most particularly Holothuria fusgoliva(White teat
fish). Those days I had keen interest in doing this culture but I
could not do anything because the then government did not have any
interest on this and there was no financial assistance. But we knew
that we could not sustain in this profession by catching sea cucumber
from the wild. In 1950, China had been successful to breed sea cumber,
but Maldivian Govt did not help us gain that knowledge but the fact is
that Maldives is the place for doing the breeding hatchery. for the
first time in Maldives in 2013, a course entitled basic Mari culture
training was conducted and I completed that course and I did another
in India from 18 Nov 2013 to 23 Dec 2013 and the title was Customized
Mari culture Training.
Now I am planning to initiate a small scale hatchery here with
individual venture. I have purchased lots of equipment for this
purpose by this time. Now procuring the license to set up a tank is in
progress. With the assistance of the expert like Sea cucumber
Principal Scientist, I am going to start the breeding hatchery for
Holothuria scabra of a brood stock with 8 females and 4 males. Can you
help for bring or import this brooders? and let me know what is the procedure ?
