It's good to see that someone appreciates the medical care of the VA. I too am greatful for the care that I receive there. IN fact, it is there where I get all of my health care needs and I have a great primary care provider (Team-B). But the problem with the VA is not the medical care, it's, as I've always said, the extreme bureaucracy and the poor leadersip of the VA that is the problem. Because of this, staff and employees of the VA are overwhelmed and many veterans, who are very ill, have to wait as long as 8 months or longer for an appointment, and even much longer for those with disability claims pending. So let's not lose sight of the fact that there are serious PROBLEMS in the VA that will only get worse if we do not speak up. For many vets, they would not have any access to medical care if it wasn't for our VA.

we really need to start a petition and mail it to Mayor Cook and tell him that he is gone far and beyond in HIS efforts to stop Asarco.
Why on earth is it okay for western refinery (Paul Foster supporter of el Paso events) facility to keep polluting and living with the constant fear of their minor but occasional explosions?
The reasons are so blatant and apparent that the Mayors efforts and the monthy defense bills he is paying to have out of office attorneys pursue this, has gotten to the point that he is attempting to insult my intelligence when he says it is for the public health?
If that's the truth the start addressing the other public health and welfare issues and that is starting with housing the Katrina Victims that are now living under the bridges because funding was cut off and Cook no longer needed his goofy a... face in the paper as a goodwill ambassador.
DONT even think of bringing the Sect Children down here for publicity sake, because we already have illegals without homes to worry about, we dont need to try to deal and cope with children who do NOT want to be a part of our society or culture.

Leadership is a 24-7 gig. Mayor Cook is not always right but he leads and that is what we elected him to do. To side with Asarco as an example of a company that plays by the rules is ignorance pure and simple. These are people who have used their workers, and those who need jobs to lie continuously about both the past and the future. Rather than labeling those who oppose Asarco as wrong and representative of "another city" you might want to read more and speak less. You are being used by a corporation who cares nothing for you, El Paso, the environment, or the truth. John Cook has a zillion habits that drive me mad, but his stand here is right on and it represents the will of the voters. You and Asarco add NOTHING to the greater good!

perhaps but the same could be said about Western Refinery, they pollute the air and area residents have complained and suffered many illnesses to include Asthma related and breathing problems. Of course the surrounding area is low to moderate income.
Also explosions are not a rare occurrence and only reported when it is loud enough to disturb outside areas (locals are used to it). Employees wear the same and similiar type of OSHA protection as the Smelter employees had. They also enjoy the same type of problems and illnesses and their life span equals to that of the old Copper workers.
The difference is that Western Refinery is owned by Paul Foster (the guy we just named the Medical School after). Refining Crude oil locally smack in the middle of housing is ridiculous and dangerous and a health hazard. The fact that we dont save a dime by having them here is another reason not to spare them the same persisting rod that ASARCO has been subjected to.
I hope and pray ASARCO stays closed, but I also hope and pray that once that is accomplished that we start scrutinizing Western Refinery in the same manner and QUIT the hypocrisy.
Or does that land ASARCO sit on a benefit for someone in the future? After all Copper has gone up in price so tremendously that our graveyard vases are no longer safe and neither was that semi tractor loaded with Copper.
I suspect that once this battle is done and over, we may be in for a BIG surprise with the true reason apparent to all.

For those citizens who do not live in the direct wind of ASARCO surely do not understand the liabilities of its operation. What's more, those who are paid to comment against Mayor Cook, who also happens to live in direct wind descent of the smoke stacks, are surely getting rich on something that will surely damage my health, and the health of so many others. I have asthma and anything like sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and such will aggravate it even more. Just like today, the sand and dust are aggravating my allergies and my asthma is bad. I've been locked in the house with the windows closed, and the dust creeps into the house through cracks and crevices. I'm sorry if you think that ASARCO is good for the nation, when you haven't paid any attention to the court case, nor have you read of the various and flagrant violations that ASARCO has committed. With such a lousy record of running a business, we surely don't need it to continue. Its the same company and its the same violations all over again if they start up. You just wait and see. If it starts, I will have to move. So will numerous others, because we won't be able to breathe. We need clean air, and ASARCO is not part of that equation.

Yo Asarco:
Try reading up on ASARCO where birth defects, arsenic and lead poisoning and public health is concerned. Maybe you will experience a minor but occasional explosion of your own. Any city willing to sacrifice the health of its inhabitants for fifteen bucks an hour deserves a company like ASARCO along with a reputation as the "armpit" of Texas. P.S. The Sect children would fit in perfectly with the staggering amount of pregnant teenagers attending High School in this city.

Lynda I hope your allergies are not affecting your eyes. I dont think the posters are supporting Asarco or the tax payer money that is being paid to lawyers for a LOSING battle, since the State of Texas and its representatives who loath El Paso thanks to our political representatives, have made their decision. Just like the United States of America has made its decision about the border fence, ITS GOING UP period end of story. Nobody is saying keep Asarco open I think people are realizing that Asarco is GOING to open. Each time our property value raises our taxes go UP UP UP and our elderly cannot live on their fixed incomes, just stop and think that the Mayor and the City of El Paso and ALL of our money is going to high priced lawyers to fight a Governing and legislating entity that has the power and authority to say ITS GOING TO OPEN. Meanwhile we dont need to worry about applying our high rising tax money for the needs of the elderly since they dont need to worry about what they are going to breath in. Your post said it all, this battle is because the smelter air just happens to filter towards the Mayor's house. Thanks for the revealation, it all makes sense. ALL I am saying is that once we are done, and the money has been paid, the battle has been lost, can we please...please...hold Western Refinery Accountable TOO...you see I have to breath in their gasoline fumes that are being refined every D..A...M...N... day and all three of my children suffer breathing ailments since birth, and I cannot afford to move. I wish the Mayor lived in my neighborhood for just one single week.
