Fox & Obel, the gourmet grocery store, plans to open a store inside the Carson Pirie Scott building, marking the Loop's first supermarket... No, Stop and Ship and Hillmans were previously there (on Block 37).

Excellent additions to State Street and that neighborhood generally. While I was very sad to see Carson's leave that location, and while I believe Macy's supplanting of Marshall Field's very bad for the city, I can see an upside to a redevelopment of the :Sullivan Center", particularly if Freed brings in an interesting mix of retailers, dining, etc. The three mentioned so far appear to be just that. What that particular block doesn't need are more non-descript sandwich chains, etc., which are fine for some areas of the city, but not for what State Street was and aspires to be.

Ugh! Flat Top Grill is horrible!! I get sick every time that I eat there, and I've heard similar stories from others. I don't think that they're very careful about how long they leave the stir fry ingredients sitting out. Otherwise, it sounds like they're doing some decent redevelopment work with that property.

Hmm, just as I feared. Nothing for the working man. It would have made sense with all the workers downtown. I thought that location would at least be a Whole Foods!

Fox and Obel has amazing stuff but it's really expensive.

People at the developer J. Freed -- aren't old enough to remember Stop & Shop and Hillman's -- which were, back in the day, very upscale loop grocers. Looks like people at the Tribune aren't old enough to remember either. Maybe Sam Zell can do some fact checking!! Good news, in any event.

There are Jewels, Dominicks and Whole Foods across the city (though, admittedly, the south and west sides could use a few more of those). So, I think that the addition of only the second F&O is deserved.

Flat Top grill I heard is bad news. A surf shop geez that is all that is needed more low priced stores on State Street. What a downturn. I wished Carson's would have reopened or even JCPENNEY or Kohl's, bu t with the current retail climate I see no Carsons downtown for quite awhile. Still a big downturn for that great store it was.

Flat Top is a good addition - food is actually affordable (well it is in Yorktown)and unlike CJX, I think the food is great.

Well as someone who used to work at Flat Top and ate a meal there everyday at the end of my shift, neither I nor any of my coworkers ever got sick from the food. Maybe the one you went to had some problem, but that's my experience.

I am very excited to hear about the Fox & Obel spot. I enjoy shopping them for gourmet items for special occasions, but their location on E. Illinois is tough to get to when you rely on the El to navigate the city for certain shopping trips.

Wait...so you don't want more low-priced stores, but you think JCPenney or Kohl's would be a good addition to the Loop? We are already stuck with a crappy discount retailer: Macy's. No one shops there who has any respect for Chicago, so why would it be a good idea to have another store like that a block away? Do some research before you post!

Wonderful! More lala food for the liberal, America hating, Arab loving sissies. Enoy your $22 grass plate, Commies! Real Americans eat hot dogs and Twinkies and aren;t afraid to burp in front of the men.

So I guess nothing from the Fresh & Easy grocery chain giving the West Coast a shake up. Darn. This CTA-rider had some high hopes. Oh well, moving on.
