Perfect example why airlines should not merge, they should only be bought. If Continental bought UA and it was run like Continental, things would be fine. Trying to be a little Continental and a little United, will never work.

This article was written in August of 2012. As imperfect as that airline may have been six months ago there is little relevance in the story now. I appreciate its intent in raising awareness to the struggles of the merger process and concerns of its frustrated clients at that time but do not understand why this six month old story is being posted here now after many of the issues referenced have been addressed and/or resolved in large part.

Hey, that's what they said about CAL in 1993. After Bethune/Brenneman and Boeing (how wonderfully alliterative!) came along, it turned into one of the best.
What UA needs is a new leader, the rest can be worked out if most everybody is on board. There will always be those who hate any CEO, no matter how good he/she is. Bethune had his opposition. To his detractors he said, "This airline is getting ready to leave the gate, so get on board or we will leave you on the Jetway"

We saw this same trash about USAir and now they are the most profitable of the big airlines.

How is it that when United was going to buy-out UsAirways they boasted that they had 12 billion dollars cash in hand, on a private jet flying to UsAirways. At the time United owned 90% of its fleet and facilities. American Airlines said they were bigger because they had more jets, but technically they leased 70% of them. A month later United files bankrupt and acts as if it had nothing. And the courts believe it, Really?

That bankruptcy filing was simply to write-off the pension obligations, which were mounting. The fact that it succeded was astounding since it was so blatant. I remember the early 2000's when we were spending like we had an infinite supply of money, throwing it on extra staff to open envelopes, tools that weren't needed, vehicles that were luxury items for managers, on and on and on..

I saw something similar to this on Travel Explosion the other day. It's an interesting question. My guess is that you'll see further consolidation in the industry.

Don't think United will ever come back!

When I tried to change my return date on a flight back to Bangkok, the agent used my credit card number from my previous purchase and added 6 miscellaneous charges, totaling more than $1486. All of these charges were not approved by me. Pure and simple fraud!

United has said it was from a computer glitch, which is known by United management. United made no apologies to wiping out my checking account. Looks like I'll be looking for another airline on my next trip.
