Is Southwest Airlines' marketing strategy putting passengers in danger?

Southwest Airlines knows it can't compete with other airlines on high-class service and doesn't try.

Stupid article. This wasn't so much safety related as self promotion of his business. As for safety SWA has never had an inflight crash that killed most of their passenger such as AA. DAL and UAL. That would have been about safety or lack of it other carriers. I would rather pick who I sat next to instead of a computer picking my seat mate. Yes serving too many drinks is a problem, a limit of 2 should be the norm.

This idiot self promoter makes the assumption that anyone who has a free drink will become drunk, which is not the case. Otherwise an awful lot of us would be in rehab for having a glass of wine with dinner. Secondly, the rest of the airplane is free to drink and the 98% of the passengers who do not sit in the exit row can equally screw up an evacuation. Ever see the pictures of the Asiana evacuation or the A340 at Toronto with all the morons carrying their baggage from a burning airplane? No THERE is something to get upset about!

Having flown passengers for 35 years, I am amazed at how FEW problems we have with intoxicated passengers. Oh sure, there are those great stories that make it into the press but when you consider the tens of millions who fly every year, it is a TINY percentage.

Here's something to really be concerned with. My airline will leave all of the emergency exits unmanned (or woman-ed) if no one is willing to pay the premium for them. The F/A's are instructed to kick anyone out who "self upgrades" when they SHOULD be picking able bodied folks from the cheap seats to man the exits.
