Whether mel-d or not correctly serviced, It was the airline's at fault. Taking short cuts to make profits is running ramped in this business. E-landing are in the news every day if you just open your eyes, and look. The FAA hearings have only scratched the surface of what really goes on. It's easy to blame a smoker and pretend nothing is wrong. The conversation on here is doing just that ! One or two post will try too look further, butt in the end it will be those damn smokers ! Fly safe, there's a lot more coming. The plane was N620CZ, one of our newest. Still smelled new. Not much over a month old. Not sure about the time of the accident, but two legs earlier it didn't have a single MEL. Few of our aircraft do because our fleet is so young. So instead of blaming the company, or maintenance, or even a smoker, how about letting the NTSB investigate and tell us what really went wrong? http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/NNumS...

One of the early reports claimed that a person was smoking in the restroom and the fire was caused by the careless diposal of the cigarette or match. Any truth to this story?

New or not, they still require maintenance. But being wholly owned by nwa... makes this is very questionable ???????? Nwa only flies airplanes... someone else is paid to fix them ! Nine bucks and hour doesn't buy much more than a quick look, and back to the break room. Soon someone else's airplane will hit a gate, and that same little block signer will have to take care of their logbook. 9 bucks an hour doesn't buy much more than a pen, and quick look. In today's world, flying by a Compass... isn't good enough. So, no we won't wait for the NTSB, we'll go with nwa's risky maintenance practices. 4000 plus mechs out the door, 1200 logbook trained replacements, speaks for itself !

It used to be a great airline but since they locked out their aircraft technicians it has gotten worse and worse. Worst on time of any airline with all that broken aircraft problems. While I would agree that the maintenance was probably better before the illegal lockout, NWA was a POC airline for a long time before you guys got the boot!

You must be misinformed on a few items. NWA is 12th out of 20 in on-time performance YTD 2008. Also, the mechanics voted to strike and then went on strike; it wasn't a lockout. That was the revisionist history legal clause AMFA used to get handouts from the state in the form of unemployment benefits after they failed in their strike.

From what I heard, from someone on the flight (third hand though, via somebody relaying it to me) was the smoke detector had tape over itm possibly so it wouldn't go off right away. When the smoke/fire alarm went off they yelled at the Flight Attendant and when he finally came back, he couldn't or wouldn't operated the fire extinguisher, so one of the first class passengers, who was a piolet used the extinguisher to put out the fire, while tghe passnegers at the back near the bathroom were told to move up and sit on people's laps. FBI spoke to all when they got off the plane and there were a couple weird things that had gone on before the plane left, (something like one guy as on the plane, but deboarded before it backed away form the gate),, but I forget the details, and this is only thirdhand and I'm not sure of the accuracy,,, The first class passengers supposedly got round trip tickets as comp, and the other got a 100$ EVoucher,,, And told to be strong and not to make a big deal about it. Surfing tonight to see if any news has come up as to what may have been the cause,,, but it sounds like the smoke alarm had been tampered with, hope they catch the SOB,, supposedly if the plane had not decended quickly it could have been much worse,,,
