OMG the concessions AA US are going to have to make in the east will force them to have to grow out west.
Delta cannot merge anymore because it is to big to fail. United can't either. US Airways and American can. Thus AA / US choices are much like Obamacare.
Why buy your lady the
Bronze of Virgin America or the
Silver of Hawaiian, when AA / US can go for the
Gold of Alaska.
Either way much like Obamacare, our countries citizens air travel choices are being diminished, but as Delta and United are too big to fail, we need competition, so AA US have got to do choose the strongest wisest growth option, for their investors, thus there is no choice but G O L D !

AA is big enough to compete as a stand alone airline. US brings nothing to the merger. The smallest wide body fleet, hubs such as PHX which are ill placed to offer good connections. This idea that only with a merger will AA be able to compete with DL and UA is nonsense. Doug Parker is the one pushing this propaganda and many are buying into it including the employee's, many of which will lose their jobs as this merger will eliminate the need for workers from both carriers doing the same job at the same airport, along with many support workers at the corporate office.

Exactly what I have been saying all along. When I asked the question 'What Does UsAir bring to the merger? no one replied. This merger may be Doug's solution to save UsAir, not AA/AMR.

Critical mass and the Northeast Dominance. Charlotte or Phoenix may not be jewels, but they do serve a passenger base to reroute through LAX, DFW, ORD, LGA and MIA.
Sure people lose jobs in a merger! But that allows the vast majority of those at the merged airlines continue to work.

AA stand alone plan relied on 5 "cornerstones" (DFW, MIA, ORD, JFK, LAX)- only 2 of which they were actually succeeding in. The eastern USA market is the largest air travel market in the world, and AA's position there has diminished markedly. Their former #1 position in the central USA market was also marginalized by their growing weakness in the east. The AA/US merger instantly corrects many network weaknesses of both AA and US - make no mistake about it...
