United has better-positioned hubs in the US which will be impossible for competitors to replicate.

Thanks to a much higher market share, EWR has better domestic feed for UA than either AA or DL at JFK. IAD has a boatload of additional capacity if/when it's needed for Atlantic routes.

Houston has better domestic feed and is more centrally located for Latin America connections than MIA. ATL has a domestic advantage to IAH but it's not nearly as convenient for midwest or west coast connections.

UA Pacific service and unused route authority are second to none and they should do very well.

If United can't make a consistent profit with these assets and a (finally) happier workforce, they need to overhaul the whole thing.
