This is actually not unusual. Jet wheel storage compartments seal when wheels lock up and the compartment is heated to prevent tire freezing and blowouts upon the plane landing. Trust me, I'm a pilot, I know what I'm talking about.

I've also flown sub-sonic craft that can reach altitudes of 170,000 feet or more, those craft use titanium wheels as rubber would not survive the rigors of space travel.

I believe the main concern is, If some fool can get over the fence and hide in the wheel well without being seen, some other fool could hide a bomb in the wheel well.

I love trolls!

Wheel wells are not pressurized or heated. There is some heat given off by the hydraulic lines that raise the temp a "little" higher than the outside temp. It's hard to believe this idiot could have survived 5 hours with almost no air and temps at 30 below Celsius. How he kept from being crushed as the gear came up and how he stayed in the well as the gear came down is another mystery.

I've been thru the San Jose airport and I've never seen a bigger bunch of losers working security.
So I am not surprised this happened.
