Man Says JetBlue Pilot Forced Him To Sit On Toilet

A New York City man is suing JetBlue Airways Corp. for more than $2 million because he says a pilot made him give up his seat to a flight attendant and sit on the toilet for more than three hours on a flight from California.

Gokhan Mutlu, of Manhattan's Inwood section, says in court papers the pilot told him to "go 'hang out' in the bathroom" about 90 minutes into the San Diego to New York flight because the flight attendant complained that the "jump seat" she was assigned was uncomfortable, the lawsuit said. If Jetblue keeps this crappy customer service up, they will end up like ATA or Aloha airlines... OUT OF BUSINESS!

I can't believe that any captain would tell a paying passenger to give up his seat for whining flight waitress.

I can't believe someone would be dumb enough to actually believe he had to to sit on a toilet, instead of his assigned seat. That flight attendant should be the one disciplined.

Since the flight was free, he had no rights to a guaranteed seat, or expectations of service. Maybe he smelled?

Oh well!

What was this pilot doing out of the cockpit anyway? They are only allowed out to take care of their own physical needs. There is more to this story.

He was travelling on a buddy pass. He was not a passenger but a freeloader and should be grateful he was on at all. Unfortuntalely the employee who gave him the pass is not going to be giving those away for a while. He was not a customer so your customer service comments don't apply. That would be like a pilot jumpseating and then complaining that the flight was delayed.

That is why Buddy Passes should be banned...more trouble than they are worth. The "buddies" never know the rules and don't follow them and are very demanding. Jetblue should have never put him on, the pass is stand-by and he should have been made to wait for the next open seat.

Being a revenue or non revenue passenger is not the basis of the problem. First, the flight attendent if not working the flight should not be jump seating. If the flight was full that jump seat should be occupied by a working flight attendant. Second, The bathroom is not a revenue seat area and should not be used to transport a passenger regardless of his/her revenue status. Last, what was the pilot doing off the flight deck handeling such a ridicules problem. This alone was an FAA viplation

There is more to this story than we are being told. Don't believe everything you read in court filings.

Hey Fred,
First, we don't know if the pilot left the flight deck. Second, of course an off-duty JB flight attendant can ride in the FA jumpseat. She has priority of the cabin seat over the buddy pass rider. She probably did him a favor by giving up her seat to get him on and than asked for it back so he/she could sleep before their shift.
You all need to get your airline employee non-revenue travel information straight before you make accusations. There is a code of conduct and it sounds like the FA tried to do this guy a favor and messed up. Most importantly the guy suing is an idiot for trying to get a free ride without knowing the rules.

Are you one of those employees who'd let their buddy passes expire and not sharing them with your friends?

YES...I share passes only when I am able to accompany the user (family or friend) on the flight. No one uses my passes unless I am present to monitor their conduct and deal with the problems which will inevitably occur while non-reving. To do otherwise is irresponsible. The reality is that non-employees will never fully grasp the concept that they are the "guest" of my employer during their flight. I won't take the chance of a mishap.

Once you are given a boarding pass. "Non Rev" travelers have the same rights as anyone on that plane. Including the delivery of lost luggage. I discourage my friends from flying since you can't get to and from your detination on these full planes now. However the status of the traveler has nothing to do with it.(There are days I woiuld have sat in the lav just to travel). It is a safety issue. Tell me if this sounds familiar. You are in the lav,nad you hear the FA say return to your seat and put the seat belt on. He did not have one. The pilot should be fired and Jet Blue fined.

I would just like to know how the guy actually spoke to the Captain. Because Im a Flight Attendant and the Pilots are not allowed to exit the cockpit, only for restroom breaks. Did he speak to him on the interphone??? I dont think so. I also dont understand how this guy dares to sue for so much money being a buddy pass rider. To bad for the employee who gave it. I believe that he or she wont be giving them out for the rest of his life after this situation. You can tell this story has lots of things that are not true.

Okay, lets get some things out in the open. The pilot can come out of the flight deck during a flight, he might have needed to take a leak. He more than likely told the guy to hang out BY the restroom( if you have been on jetblue you would know there is space to hang out in the back) so she can get a bit of rest. She did him a favor by giving up her seat so his funcky axx can get to where he was going. HE IS A FREELOADER HE DID NOT PAY FOR THE PASS ( well he did he paid $30 instead of $249) Yeah that crewmember must feel like a jerk right about now and will never give his/her buddy passes to anyone again. With all the technology we have on cell phone now a days and JB has wifi he should have contacted CNN ireport from his cell and tell the story as it was unfolding and he would win his case.

This has nothing to do with buddy passes. IT is against the Faa rules to have someone sit in the bathroom. I can't believe the working flight attendants the complaining fa and both captains would risk their jobs because a fa is uncomfortable

Riding on a buddy pass or not, the man was still a passenger, and the captain is still legally responsible for his safety. The FAA doesn't care if there's any revenue involved. So, when you then turn on the "fasten seatbelt" sign, you're now intentionally jeopardizing a passenger's safety by forcing him to remain on the toilet (or anywhere but in a passenger seat with his seatbelt fastened) and violating federal air regulations to boot. What a pro!!!
