Eliminate the problem altogether, get rid of the F'ing overhead bins!!! If it doesn't fit under your seat, check it. Overhead bins, including the honeycomb construction, are a maintenance nightmare. They were not designed to have some idiot try to put a bag the size of a small chevy in them. Keep pushing and pushing the bag until it breaks through the bin. Bins that contain fire extinguishers, first aid kits, etc. can't be MEL'd, so they need to be fixed before dispatching the aircraft. Saw an article that said one major airline removed "whip cream" aerosol cans from the first class section and it saved a ton of money by reducing the weight of the airctaft vs. fuel burn, imagine what removing the bins would save in fuel costs, not to mention reduced maintenance costs.

Hmmmm. Not a bad suggestion. Also getting rid of that extra weight will help fuel efficiency. I'm sure one of the low cost carriers would do it but most of them buy/lease aircraft retired from the majors. It would probably be too costly to redo an existing aircraft.
