I work in Philadelphia, P.A. at The U.P.S. Air Hub and I'll tell you like this. The people that say U.P.S. sucks are the package handlers who get paid little to no money to bust their butt everyday slaving for pennies.Jobs like sorters/belt walkers, loaders,un loaders are some of the worst jobs ever. The only people who aren't complaining either work at a desk, are truck drivers, the people who make sure the labels are facing up,lazy irregular(over 70lbs) package cart drivers,or they're apart of the safety committee and maybe some lazy part time supervisors.U.P.S. is only good in the long run,if you want to go to school or if you need health benefits.

For people considering a package handler job at U.P.S.

It's about 3 months until you're in the Union
6 months until you receive your health benefits
Most of the part time jobs suck but always pick an easier job like small sort.
Container unload is not that bad either
I didn't take a piss test but never get high or drunk knowing that you have a job interview coming up
Most of the part time jobs are 3 hours
If you're a temp/seasonal worker
Come to work on time (they're big on attendance)
keep your cool and composure (most of the trainers/managers are assholes/people on power trips)
Follow the safety rules & regulations, use proper hand to surface (don't damage the packages) etc. and they'll keep you
If you're young,always have a plan
You don't want to slave at U.P.S. for the rest of your life
Try to take advantage of their earn and learn program (they pay for your college/certain schools)
Try to move up in the company (that takes a while/it goes by seniority)
Last but not least.Don't steal.
Good luck.

DRIVERS HAVE TO WORK TIL AGE 57 NOW IN ORDER TO RETIRE. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HOW MANY MANAGEMENT PERSONEL COULD HANDLE A 150 LB PACKAGE. ESPECIALLY UP 3 FLIGHTS OF STAIRS. HIGHEST INJURY RATE IN THE INDUSTRY AND THEN ATTEMPT TO THREATEN THE EMPLOYEE FOR GETTING INJURED. PROMOTION FROM WITHIN TRULY MEANS BROWN NOSING OR PAYOLLA TO THE BOSS. UPS WILL DIE FROM ITS MACHIAVELLIAN MEANS. WHEN THEY WAKE UP AND ENTER THE 21ST CENTURY THEY MAY HAVE HAPPY EMPLOYEES BUT AS LONG AS THE MANAGERS OWN THE COMPANY,THE WORKERS WILL SUFFER. PART TIME WAGES FOR FULL TIME WORK CAUSED 1 STRIKE. THE NEXT WILL BE TO LOWER THE RETIREMENT AGE. BACKS, KNEES, ANKLES, SHOULDERS CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH...AND THE FUMES FROM THE ANTIQUATED TRUCKS CAN KILL EVEN THE TOUGHEST OVER TIME. COME UP THE YEARS UPS, EVEN DALE JARRETT WON'T DRIVE THE TRUCK FOR A REASON!!!!!
thank you every one listen up in 30 yrs almost ALL MANGERS AND STUPIDVISORS WERE drives WHO COULD NOT HANDLE THE PACKAGE DRIVERS JOB BOTTOM LINE.

Obviously most of you have not figured out that this is a blue collared work environment, which means you have to actually work to earn your piece of the pie. Simply put, if you don't like to earn what you have by the strength of your back and sweat of your brow, get a higher education, and get a white collared job where you can sit on your can and snivel and whine about your pay and benefits. Leave the hard work to those of us with the grit to be proud of a hard days work.

I got hired on at UPS a couple of months ago as an unloader. I was told they were not doing any layoffs b/c they were not like the other companies here in AR that were laying people off. Well 3 weeks later and the last 4 that was hired on in the unloader/and loading dept were let go. I was one of those 4. I see that they are hiring again and I applied online but I get a comment that says as a previous employee you are not elgible for rehire. What's that about. I've tried contacting my old manager but have not gotten a response. I was a hard worker! What should I do?

Depends on how long you worked there, and if you were in any kind of insurance/401k/other retirement that has your SS# on it. "Background check" MIGHT not pick up a part time, short time type job, that had no benefits. If your departure 16 years ago was under bad circumstances,(no notice, no-show or tell the boss off and walk out the door) it would be bad if UPS freight finds out about it you would probably not get hired. But if you don't tell them, they hire you and find out later they can FIRE you for false job application.

I work for the largest hub in mid atlantic region. Almost every single person on the purple belt has to take copious amount of pain pills just to get thru the shift. We even have employees who show up drunk and our supervisor kenny has them clean up trucks so they wouldn't bump into any corporate guys who would acctually fire them

<quoted text> About 20 years
After being at UPS for nearly 10 years as a supervisor, I can tell you this... At least MOST of my team of 40 part timers at UPS either had a degree AS or BA/BS OR were working on an advanced degree.
Fact is, a BS/BA is now considered more like a high school education. So, don't plan on moving UP the ranks simply because of a degree - won't matter. What you NEED is to SHOW them that you're an intense worker, smart, resourceful, great 'can do' attitude AND other business skills that are needed. THEN there are most likely others on the list that you;d be competing against. I think that the last poster which mentioned 20 years is a bit of an exaggerated stretch. However, IF you are indeed intense and want to move up LOCALLY into management (supervisor, etc.) you're looking at probably 5-10 years. Reason being, in order to manage these teams and gain their respect, you actually need to do their work AND be able to do it VERY WELL. In fact, if you can do most everything at the center better than anyone else, you'll most likely be advanced to a p/t supervisor or onroad supervisor within 5-7 years.

I am seeing a lot of straight trucks lately painted white with the UPS insignia on the side of the cab doors. The box in small letters says "cartage services". What part of UPS are they part of? Many of them seem to have Latina women drivers in their late 20s or early 30s. Where did this division suddenly appear from?(Nothing against them I just wonder what is going on?)

yeah, UPS somehow gets away with hiring you with the idea that you're gonna be working every day, then they just lay you off, day-by-day, based on the volume. It's really unfair and there should be unemployment benefits for this, so they're encouraged to stop it.

Are you a casual or a full timer? It sounds like you are a casual and that is just what it sounds like "a casual" one that works only when needed. There are no guarantees of hours. If you are a full timer then some contracts guarantee forty hours a week either driving or in the hub. If you are a casual then that is the job you took and if you wanted to be a regular full timer you need to work part time just like everyone else had to do to get in. UPS is allowed to offer these types of driving jobs. People do take them thinking it is a guarantee of hours. Maybe people are just not wanting to listen to the description of the job but if you don't like it nobody is forcing you to stay. No company can predict nowadays a guarantee of hours.

What is UPS "cartage services" hauling. Are they taking work away that would otherwise go to regular UPS drivers?

This job as package handler sucks, continually lifting boxed for 4-5 hrs load just about 800 packages every 2 hrs. scan boxes, check if it belongs in the truck, load em, make a wall, For the supervisors just tell em to "shut your ass up", but i still sympatize with them. They get yelled at alot more and are puppets. Who cares about the supervisors as long as your working at a good pace. Working Conditons are Cold, Hot, dusty, dirty, and dark. just ignore the supervisors they don't matter anyway. The pay is crappy in my mind. I'm at 11.85/hr after 3 years. Looking to move to driver which even then the pay is just decent with full-time hours. The health benefits are good if you get sick alot or have children. Or you break your back, hope not. Weekends are off to recover from your bruises and strain. The union is a joke.analyze the pros and cons. just a little insight on my thoughts. it is what you make of it in the end. Just telling it how I see it.

I see them at Ohare all the time. They are part of an air freight operation that UPS bought up, they are legal. They take shipments direct from the airport to destination, and from shippers direct to the airport. This freight does not go through the regular UPS system. They love those Latina drivers! They are bilingual and can talk to and flirt with the Latino dockmen at the factories they pick up and deliver at. They get loaded and unloaded right away! Other trucks have to wait. In air freight, time is money.

I see UPS is running a lot of ads again for early AM package handlers, supposedly permanent. I hope this might be a sign of freight picking up. I have not seen any other signs of it.

I've been working for UPS for about 3 years now as a Full Time Ramper and it sure does suck. The supervisors pick on the hard working employees while they let the lazy farts stand around(80% of the Rampers). Their reason was that we, the "better worker" will get things done faster and efficiently, while the lazy farts would take their sweet ass time completing a task knowing that the Union has their back. Of course I can be a lazy ass too, but that just isn't me. Also the Union sucks ass because they WILL NOT help the hard workers. I am starting to adjust into becoming a mild worker, because I feel screwed by both sides, Management and Union.
A bunch of the hard working co-workers came with a quote saying that " UPS rewards the lazy, and punishes the hard workers." which I find very true.
To the point. UPS doesn't care about anyone. Doesn't matter if you're the most hard working person around, if you made one mistake, then you're out. For exmaple, there was this hard working guy at my hub who always did whatever the supervisors asked and always stayed late because help was needed, then one snowy day, he was assigned to de-ice the plane with this PT guy, and unfortunately he was in the bucket to de-ice and the PT guy was driving. The rookie stuck the side of the engine and the both were terminated.

Slow down! You're trying to do too much and it's driving you - and everyone else - up the wall. What's more, if you're in too much of a hurry you'll start to become accident-prone and that will make you even more het up. Try to take any setbacks or domestic mishaps in your stride, otherwise you'll end the day feeling like a nervous wreck.
