I'm a little ticked. I signed up for the basic H & R Block course. Struggled through the whole course...which wasn't not a piece of cake. Then just before the final, the district manager came for interviews. She told me that the pay is $7.25 per hour. This is what cashiers make in our area and cashiers don't have to know taxes! The district manager said that the job will only last a couple of weeks in February, during the rush.
Personally, I think all should be put on the table BEFORE people sign up for the training.
The only reason a person would want to work the few weeks, is so they can get additional classes at $20 for the whole summer, books included.
The H & R Block tax prep books are #1 for learning. No other books are out there that are as good.
Then, I found out that H & R Block hires temp people. Those poor souls that have signed their names to slave contracts to get a job. The temp worker receives $10.25 per hour!!!! That means that H & R Block pays the temp agency anywhere from $15 to $20 per hour for those people.
I don't get it. Why is it normal, smart people can't make a living anymore? ONly Jew joints like the Block and temp agencies have a right to rake in tons.
I totall agree with the others, you shouldn't work at all, you should just stay aware from other humans as much as possible. It would be an utter shame for you to speak your trash to another soul. I pray for you.

I am in my 3rd season with Block. I work in a district office and have had some ups and downs, but all in all, really enjoy my job.

As far as pay, I made $9.00 my first year,$13.50 my second year and make $26.00 in my 3rd year.

Every business/company has it's good and bad seeds, and no one should be surprised by that.

I am in my second season, but am blessed by "inhereting" a client list from a 4th year leaving due to health issues. Get through the first season, work off-season at a district office if offered to you. Thats when the real tax education begins..

Hi everyone. Question, for first year HR empl. are they offered medical benefits or retirement plans? And it looks likes HR block wants people to prove themselves before they start paying you the big bucks. Am I correct in saying that? Being a single parent who grew up later in life, Im now trying to find my place in this wonderful world and I love doing taxes! You wont hear that often!:o)

this is my first year and they have a great basic class but they dont teach you how to put it in the computer and you are right if you ask a question they look at you like you should know. and the pay is awful for what you have to do. i see how you can make money if you have been there for a while. but give me a break we deserve a little more.

Hi,

I work for Block and I wonder if anyone knows about the Bonus this year. I remember being told that they were not going to subtract your salary this year and your bonus would be the total amount. My fellow workers say it is the same and your salary goes against your bonus. What is it?

Thanks, 4 more days!!!!!

All very interesting. Hope somebody who has previously responded still checks in and can answer my question.

A couple of years ago while still preparing for the CPA exam, I inquired about working at H&R block during the tax season and was told $10 first year regular,$12 for speaking Spanish.

I am now a fully licensed CPA (with 10 years industry experience, banking/commercial underwriting mostly) and make $33/hour roughly on my day job; it wouldn't make much sense for me to take the H&R seasonal work for much less than that (guess I can go down to $20 if I get enough hours but not to the teens).

I do not specialize in taxes but I have looked at the complex returns of our borrowers for years (personal and corporate) and have taken a couple of 2-day tax seminars through the University of Illinois.

Would H&R care about all of the above (and assuming I took their course, which I believe is a pre-requisite irrespective of prior knowledge or experience) when discussing compensation or will they adhere strictly to their experience-based pay schedule?

Thanks so much!

Your hourly pay is deducted from your bonus, so you get the difference. If you had a chance to check your "bonus" report, it stated at the bottom it was estimated total compensation.

just finished 1st season wrote:
Well, I just finished my first season with H & R Block. In early January, I made the mistake of asking about a weird thing in the Schedule A computer software. The law had just past congress reinstalling the option for either a sales tax deduction or an income tax deduction. The software wanted us to put in "Y" for sales tax for some weird reason, even though you wanted the income tax option.
I was basically training myself on the software. But when I came to this, I guess I just wanted some feedback as to if the "Y" was correct or not.
Oh MY GOD! I asked a question to an 8 year person.
I may have as well killed someone. I was belittled and ranted on. I never did get any feedback.
So I shut up and didn't talk anymore.
I've already decided not to return next year. I am going to take the classes in the summer, though. I'm going to go somewhere else to prepare tax returns.
This past six months has been pure misery. Fortunately, I didn't do my own taxes on their machines.
HAY WAUPACA, I realize this it's been quite awhile since your post, but I'll throw this out any way. I need some one like you in my practice for the 2008 season. I'm not affiliated with any chains. Don't spose you're planning on moving to the Madison area? Contact me if you are

I finished my first year working at H&R Block in Florida. The pay was $9.50 an hour which is deducted from your commissions. For me the net turned out to be less then $11.00 an hour. Not really worth the effort considering they charge an average of $165 per return.
Most of the prepares do not have college educations, especially the newer ones. H&R Block cannot attract CPA's or MBA's or college grads because of their pay scale. All first year people are paid the same, and H&R Block does not care what education or certification you have.
I would suggest most people seek out a CPA or college grad at a non-chain, to prepare their returns.

I have worked for Block for about 4 years, I started out as a receptionist at $8 just for some extra cash then the next year I became a tax pro. I made $8 that first year as a tax pro, but let me tell you that you cant get a better raise anywhere. THe more clients you get the better your raise and bonus check will be. Work as many Saturdays as you can wouldnt recommend Sundays they are pretty slow. First year bonus check for 3 months of work was $1600 that was part time too. Second year made $10.75 hour bonus check after taxes $1900 part time 20 hours week. This year I made $15 hour and haven't yet got my bonus check but it will probably be around the same or $1200. Block will pay you well after the first year because it is based on how many client you bring in and dollar amount so take the classes get up on the tax knowledge and go to Block. They strive to educate their people but sometimes dont hire the best ones due to lack of motivated people that want to learn.

I posted a separate question about this BUT...

I've read some of the posts in this thread and I gotta say this isn't what I wanted to hear. Heck, IF...I'm going to take a job at $7.25 an hour I sure as heck won't be bringing in clients. Why would I?
At that rate I'm there for the experience and I expect the owner to keep me busy gaining experience.

Thanks for the input Johnied, Loyal, and Mike. I realize that Block may be a poor payer, I am mostly considering them as a potential part-time employer in order to familiarize myself with their software and processes and to gain actual tax preparation experience. I enjoy taxation which, evidently, was part of the CPA exam and had to study for extensively. However, I lack the practical nuts and bolts of using a software program and getting people in and out the door on a mass basis.

Also, wouldn't my clients in a private practice setting want to be told that I have (at least some) actual tax preparation experience - in this tough and crowded market, I'm afraid that simply being a licensed CPA and a little advertising alone won't get them in the door. What are your thoughts on this?

p.s. Loyal, I'm not sure what your age/background/educational attainment is but I don't think the teens is where I want to be on an hourly basis other than MAYBE just one year while I get my bearings (otherwise, the effort of having obtained a post-graduate professional license becomes worthless).

Thanks again.

I would think you'd need several years of experience before you'd start up a practice of your own.

If you're sitting for the CPA exam, why don't you get a job with a CPA firm for tax season? Ask around and interview with a couple large firms and some small ones. They'll pay more than Block and you'll get better experience. Block will have you doing 1040EZ all day (they have a lot of low income clients so you'll get earned income credit and some other things like that, too), but an accounting firm will get your experience with many different kinds of flow through entities, more complex situations, etc.

If you're going to practice as a CPA, even doing grunt work during the tax season at a firm will get you great experience for the profession.
