Awarded annually by Germany's Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen, the Red Dot Award is an internationally recognized quality label for excellent design. "We are absolutely delighted to have received this renowned prize for the UC-HTT-M," states Lena Wolf, who as Product Manager Retail at METTLER TOLEDO is responsible for the UC Evo Line. "Food retailers have long realized that they can gain competitive edge with modern, stylish presentation at their fresh food counters. Scales play an important part in the overall look, as we've seen with the success of our Black Line scales in the colour black. The Red Dot Award for our UC Evo Line has now confirmed our sense of contemporary and first-class design at the food counter."
The UC-HTT-M counter scale is characterised by its simple, clean lines. Decorative details have been eliminated from the touchscreen-operated scale in favor of smooth surfaces and clearly defined shapes. The narrow housing and slim borders around the displays place the focus firmly on functionality. This restrained design ensures that the scale's large customer display draws - and holds shoppers' attention, thus making the display the ideal platform for promoting products and brands to consumers at the point of sale.
Design - more than simply looking good
Functionality and day-to-day practicality are also fundamental to the way the scale has been designed on the operator side. There is nothing to distract sales employees from their activities on the clearly laid-out touchscreen. Furthermore, the UC-HTT-M's housing is largely free of joints or grooves which could harbour dirt, thus reducing the time employees need to spend cleaning the device. High-quality materials ensure that the unit is robust and durable. In addition, the UC-HTT-M's die-cast aluminium housing is not only elegant but also energy-saving, since it allows waste heat to be expelled from the metal housing without needing a fan.
Making a statement at the counter
"The UC-HTT-M enables food retailers to introduce a contemporary feel at their counters," continues Lena Wolf from METTLER TOLEDO. "Its simple elegance makes a real impression and is - as now substantiated by the Red Dot Award - at the cutting edge of modern design." Available in both classic silver and that ever-popular design color black, the UC-HTT-M fits perfectly into modern store interiors. Additionally, a mechanism on the award-winning scale allows flexible adjustment of the customer display, thus enabling the scale to be adapted to each counter's particular height and lighting conditions.
From the counter to the design exhibition
The Red Dot Award ceremony is due to take place on 2 July 2012 in the Aalto-Theater in Essen, Germany. From 3 to 29 July 2012, the UC-HTT-M will be on display as an exhibit among other 2012 Red Dot Award winners in a special exhibition at the Red Dot Design Museum on the site of the former Zeche Zollverein coal mine and industrial complex in Essen.

We use scales every day in our lives and dont notice. In fact, it may be possible that we are taking scales for granted.
The truth is we need scales in order to help us. Without balance scales, a counting scale or a floor scale, we may be left to guess instead of knowing the exact amount.
Balance scales are often used to weigh people in doctors offices. Theyre also used in gyms, with dieticians and nutritionists. Anytime you need to be weighed by someone in the medical field, they will more than likely use a balance scale.
There are other types of balance scales too. The older ones are simply two scales hanging from a horizontal beam with a fulcrum in the middle. These are often seen as the zodiac sign of Libra or in the hands of blind lady Justice.
A balance scale could be a fun project to make at home with your kids. It can also be good as a project for children beginning school, like in kindergarten or first grade. Its a good way to teach them both math and arts and crafts.
Who Can Benefit From a Counting Scale?
Stores and companies usually use counting scales for various reasons. If youve gone to a store where everything is measured by the pound, your items were measured on a counting scale.
Delis use these types of scales. So do candy stores and stores where you buy pet food. Organic food stores also use these types of scales.
Companies that take inventory also use counting scales. It saves them hours of time. It is easier to program a scale to count for you than to manually count items. It also nearly eliminates human error.
A floor scale simply measures objects while sitting on the floor. This is good for heavy objects and for weighing large children and adults.
Some objects are very heavy and cannot be measured by human means. Floor scales made for large objects like this often measure up to 10,000 pounds.
Other objects may just be difficult to measure. For example, a consignment store that measures clothing by the pound may use this type of scale.
There are some special scales that can be used to measure more than a few tons, but they are usually found in factories. You may find them in mills as well.
