i worked at the school up until it closed. the embezellment part is partially true in conjunction with a poor business sense and a poorly trained and non-licensed book keeper.
i feel badly for all the prospective students who lost their money and i hope you all get the training you want from another reputable school. i too got the short end of the stick along with a bunch of the other staff members as well. hopefully everything will work out for the best and i wish everyone luck in all their makeup endeavors.

The Academy will re-open September 2011. Totally re-organized contact them for adjustments and credits for classes never received.

Pottsville, PA- Empire Education Group, the largest provider of cosmetology education in North America, has acquired The M.G. Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts, the first name in makeup education, from its founder and owner, Marvin G. Westmore. Empire plans to rebrand the Burbank, CA school and continue its tradition as an advanced makeup academy for salon, spa, television, motion picture, theatre, runway and session makeup artists at its current location.

Marvin G. Westmore, founder of the Westmore Academy (1981), motion picture and television makeup artist and renowned makeup educator for thousands of working makeup artists today, will remain as a consultant to Empire for the academy. He will also offer consultation on Empire's makeup program at their Manhattan, NY campus. He will continue to be the curator and leader of the George Westmore Research Library and Museum. Empire will incorporate some of the museum's artifacts and historical collections into its curriculum.

Westmore is a six-time-Emmy-nominated, third-generation professional Hollywood makeup artist, with more than 45 years in consumer makeup and in the motion picture and television industry. Just some of his makeup credits include Doctor Dolittle (1967), The Buddy Holly Story (1978), Blade Runner (1982), V (1984), V—The Final Battle (1984), Breaking Away (1979), Futureworld (1976), Elvis (1979) and Ode to Billy Joe (1976). He is also past president of the Makeup & Hairstylist Guild, Local 706.

"The Westmore family is truly the first family of makeup in every sense of the word—they even have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as a tribute to four generations' contributions to their art and craft," says Franklin K. Schoeneman, Chairman and CEO of Empire Education Group. "Together, the Empire family and the Westmore family will provide working makeup artists, as well as Empire's cosmetology students, with a new level of excellence and experience in makeup education, increasing their career options after graduation."

Thanks for your post Steve, I will contact the school when it re-opens to inquire about our refund owed us back when the school had closed. I spoke with Mr. Westmore several times while at the school, and find him to be very kind and down to earth. I feel what had happened to the school was unfortunate for everyone and hope everything does get resolved. I will be in touch. Thanks again.

I guess since it was purchased by Empire and Marvin Westmore filed BK, the students at time westmore owned it won't be getting any refund. His debts would be dismissed. Therefore, the students who waited patiently, will get nothing. It's a shame, Westmore's are part of Hollywood history, and it seems it doesn't matter to him, he's still gonna make the big bucks, and so is his family.

Hey everyone,
I can completely sympathize with every single one of you. Having attended Westmore in 2006, I was lucky to receive an excellent education. It is very unfortunate what happened at the school. To set the record straight, there was embezzlement within the accounting department, as well as the admissions department. Needless to say, those who were involved are no longer with the company.
Empire Cosmetology School purchased the curriculum, as well as the rights to everything Westmore Academy. If you choose to attend Westmore Academy at Empire, you will receive an outstanding education, as that is what Westmore stands for. Several of the same instructors, as well as employees have returned to Westmore Academy at Empire for the simple fact that it is an outstanding school.
Attending Westmore will give you a stellar education, many industry contacts, and the confidence to enter the entertainment industry as a competent makeup artist. I only hire assistants who I know have gone through the Westmore training.
If you need to contact the school regarding the past, present or future, their number is : 800-964-4134.
Give them a call, explore your options. Good luck with everything.

Westmore Academy at Empire would like to replace your certificate, if it is still needed. As a past graduate of Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts, we still consider you part of our school and history!

What a rip off. Do research on westmore. He filed bk. He AND his staff conned us out of thousands and never cared about anything but his name and money. I'm sure some people got their jobs back. I guess he owed them for helping him with his scheme to rip off people. Try other schools before you invest in "the name" that many of us paid for.

Wow, how sad to read all of this. I came out of there around 1994. I had no trouble with the school then. I was going out on lots of calls from the school too. So sad to see this happen to them.

I attended and worked for the school as an assistant and still talk to others who were employed there. Everyone including Mr. Westmore were victimized by people in the admission and accounting dept. If your unhappy with the education and experience you had at Westmore, than for that I apologize. But don't go on websites posting assumptions.

WOW!!

What a shock!
I went to the Academy in 2004 and had a great time as well as a great education. I stumbled on this while trying to find the school to inquire about some of the makeup products they had.
At the time I went I saw no problems going on but, then who does. My instructors Val and Mike were both great people. We had so many different specialty guest instructors while I was there and their insight into the business was very informative.
Since leaving I have been afforded opportunities I never thought possible. Having started late in life with this drastic change was a bit scary but I am so glad I did it.
I hope that with the sale and newly organized curriculum the school will continue to flourish and prosper.
I do wish all those who have somehow been duped the best of luck in their future endeavors and hope that they like me never give up on the dream.
