As a matter of fact, the economy is so bad, even immigrants want to go home.

So the cute Slovakian teen who used to serve me ice cream is being replaced by a 52yo fat guy from the neighborhood ? This is not progress.

This is definitely happening in Marquette MI. Usually, the college kids from Northern Michigan University find work pretty easily in the Summer. This Summer adults are willing to take the minimum wage jobs.

Seems teens are competing with experienced yet sometimes overqualified older workers. Is there an advantage to hiring a "reliable and hungry" laid-off older worker, who's (possibly) only looking for a temporary fix until he can get his life back in order, over a teen with re-hire potential for the next summer?

I didn't know the Stimulus package had a youth job program packaged into it. I thought I'd be relieved but I wonder who really needs the job more, teenagers or adults with mortgages and kids.

Do you believe that it is reasonable to expect that human governments will accomplish employment and housing for everyone?

hiring young people over older people would be okay except for one little detail, young people dont want to work, they want the money but they dont want to do the work to earn it. if they are getting paid for talking on their cell phone, or talking and flirting with the manager, or even sleeping with the manager if it advances their position, then i guess it is ok to hire young people. older people know what it is to work, they have raised families, put kids through college, and have an abundance of work experience. what's your problem with older people, you think they should be put out to graze in some field or something. most older people i know can work circles around the younger people and they dont whine and cry about everything.

I would hire someone with a mortgage and a family, they will take lots of abuse before they quit because they need the money. Teenagers just get mad, quit, and then 2 weeks later at nighttime they throw a concrete block through your front window. Never hire someone under 18 that wears all black.

I just wanted to give a little advice as well to those looking for work. Make sure you post a keyword rich resume on the job boards such as monster and careerbuilder. A lot of employers are hiring Staffing Agencies to only mine for resumes on job boards, in fact it is a very effective staffing solution for employers. So make sure you have a very keyword-rich resume and post it on job boards for recruiters to find.

Saying illegals take all the jobs? Maybe you should get a better education. There is becoming a shortage in jobs that require 4+ years of education. Also "aliens" do the jobs that normal Americans won't want because they are disgusting jobs that they don't want to do. Then they go home and complain how they are stealing jobs. Sure some of them take jobs but not to many of them take jobs that normal people wan't.
