How 'miniature suns' could provide cheap, clean energy

There are 1 comment on the BBC News story from Thursday Nov 15, titled How 'miniature suns' could provide cheap, clean energy. In it, BBC News reports that:

We're just five years away from harnessing almost unlimited power from "miniature suns", some start-ups say: nuclear fusion reactors that could provide abundant, cheap and clean energy. In a world of global warming caused by our addiction to fossil fuels, there is an urgent need to find sustainable alternative sources of energy.

"The science behind the idea has been proven, says Wade Allison, emeritus professor of physics at Keble College, Oxford. The challenge is more practical."

Once again, it is the actual manufacturing to create the "wide scale" use of the technology that will hold up the roll out of a fusion reactor reliable above unity.

""The timescale we can't be sure about, but the basic science is solved and the problems are technical ones to do with materials," says Prof Allison.""

The so called problems that are "technical ones" would be the rub that does not allow a reactor now, that can generate more than it uses to keep the process continuous and contained. The prognostication of 5 years till roll out gives one skeptical chills. Of course in the U.S. there is the NRC that would sit on the technology for 20 years "allowing" proof of concept small scale devices to be built. Too little, too late?
