Four professors from a leading Athens university Wednesday got stiff jail terms for stealing eight million euros in public funds.

Aimilios Metaxopoulos, a former rector of Panteion, Athens' political sciences university, was sentenced to 25 years in prison, while his deputy Panayotis Getimis got 16 years.

Another former rector, Dimitris Kontsas and his deputy, Konstantinos Papathanassopoulos, received suspended sentences of 14 and 15 years respectively.

The chief accountant of the university got a life term.

The money was siphoned off between 1992 and 1998. Most of it came from donations from the European Union and were intended to finance academic courses.
