Are you freaking kidding me???!!! Lula is a joke to anyone in Brasil who works in any professional or semi-professional career ... he is the hero of the ignorant, for they are simply hungry and endangered by criminals and care not for details that include corruption and bribery ... the "democracy" in Brasil has a long way to go - the people have yet to empower themselves and become something other than the vehicle that the politicians and business leaders ride ... without the "jeito", the Brasilian economy would collapse, for bribery is the grease that keeps the wheels of commerce turning in Brasil ... and once again, the good people of Brasil get screwed as the politicians and business leaders live like kings and the poverty-stricken masses (about 85% of the population) continue to work the cane fields in 120+ F. degree temperatures along with a balmy 80%+ humidity level for less than $1.00 US per hour ...

The Zero Hunger programme was a failure; not even the Brazilian Government refers to the programme any more.
This programme intended to distribute food coupons to the poorest families; the families then would be allowed to exchange coupons for food (and food only) in pre-authorized merchants (who would redeem the coupons against cash).

Currently, the main social programme is Bolsa Familia (Family Dole), by which a small stipend (around R$ 100, or US$ 60, per child) is paid to the poor families, provided that the children attend school.
While there are doubts whether such money can bring anyone out of misery (even more because children must only attend school, there is no obligation of being approved in educational exams), it seems that the money is putting some food on the table.
