Brazilian Woman Charged With Torture

Full story: The Associated Press

“I didn't think I was torturing her. In my mind, I was educating her.”

Brazilian police said Thursday that charges have been filed against a businesswoman who claims she was 'educating' a 12-year-old girl by allegedly torturing and chaining her to an iron staircase.

Silvia Calabresi, 49, was arrested and will face trial on charges of holding the girl in private confinement, abusing her and forcing her to work in slave-like conditions, said Bruno Hermano, public safety spokesman in Brazil's central Goias state.

Police in the city of Goiania said a tip led them to raid a house on March 17 where they found the girl, identified only as 'Lucelia,' handcuffed to the staircase and showing signs of torture and malnutrition. Read more

There is something strange about Brazilians and the way they "teach" their children. I once worked with a woman who said her mother would tie her and her sisters up and use hot irons on them and that sometimes she would be bound and tickled for hours. One of her sisters was tickled in the armpits so much that she strained a muscle that took weeks to heal. Maybe torture is not as well-defined as it is in America.

Carefull! Generalization leads to false conclusions. Should I take , let's say, jerry springer's audience as an example of american behavior? I don't think so...
