Without any doubt, no boxer has leveled the performance of Roberto manos de piedra Duran in the lightweight category.

Sure Duran hit him low and should have been disqualified but up until then Duran had clearly been winning that fight.

Roberto was the meanist, most feared fighter of all!Just ask "Sugar Ray". Before the fight Ray looked like he was walking to his execution. Duran looked like a caged lion as he paced in his locker room.

I have read and have seen fight even today at the lightweight division and I have not seen yet a boxer with the strengh and punch of Roberto Duran in the Lightweights. He was not that smart at that time, but the wisdom came after on time to be able to beat fighters like Sugar Ray Leonard, Carlos Palomino, Pipino Cuevas, Iran barkley, Davey Moore . It had been a Epic fight to watch in the Lightweight a fight between Roberto Duran and Julio Cesar Chavez. Who do you think that could had won?

after his minor hiccup against de jesus in the first fight the following 7 and a half years were simply awesome and the third fight against de jesus in 1978 was a masterclass! so i would have to say that duran was the best lightweight of my time. what happened after the lightweight years was a bonus. he took the second leonard fight at very short notice for the money and has only really fought for the money ever since and just like muhammad ali, duran has lost to some seriously rubbish fighters who probably would not of been good enough to be sparring partners in his hey day. in fact, i would even go as far to say that all 4 of duran's title winning triumphs were dubious to say the least however, what he has achieved in between is incredible. people seem to think that leonard was the best fighter duran ever fought? NO WAY! make no mistake, leonard was incredibly talented but duran knew how to spoil his tactics. he fought better fighters than leonard but leonard had charisma.i wonder how highly people would of rated duran if he had retired after that first leonard fight. lastly, from what little i have seen of old Benny Leonard videos. personally i think he would of beaten duran easily. so i would have to rate benny leonard the greatest lightweight of all time.his record speaks for itself.

the only fighters with any case to be made are Duran, Benny Leonard, pernell whitaker, and joe gans. Whitaker won't get much credit because of how recently he fought, but the man unified the division(something mayweather, chavez, de la hoya, mosley, arguello and many more did not)and ran through the best lightweights of the era and lost at most a combined 20-25 rounds in his 220+ championship rounds at the weight. Gans is hard to rate due to the era he fought in but his accomplishments can not be denied, however i think he doesn't quite deserve to be mentioned for the top spot. That leaves Leonard, the longest reigning champion who made 8 defenses (4 kayo's) with wins over Lew Tendler, Rocky Kansas, and the great Freddie Welsh, and Duran, who made 12 defenses (11 kayo's) with wins over Esteban Dejesus, Ken Buchanon, Ray Lampkin, and a non-title win over future 140lbs. champ Saoul Mamby.Duran also blew out former 126lbs.champ Ernesto Marcel (who had beaten Alexis Arguello and Sammy Serrano) in 6 rounds.I don't think you can argue that in p-4-p terms that Leonard was greater because of what Duran accomplished above 135lbs and so late into his career. An absolute prime Leonard would have never beaten (and probably have been kayoed by) Ray Leonard at 147, wouldn't have been able to go 15 rounds with Marvin Hagler, let alone be competitive, or have beaten Iran Barkley at 160, especially score a knockdown, the fact that Duran was so far past his best for these fights only adds to his greatness. I've seen videos of Leonard, make no mistake he has a strong case for the top spot and is a for sure top 10 P-4-P fighter, but Duran was simply better. In his prime, the 1975-1978 135lbs. version of Duran was the most complete fighter in history, at least that there is video of.Leonard had better challengers, but struggled a whole lot more, and if you struggle to beat Lew Tendler or Rocky Kansas, than there is simply no way you will beat Roberto Duran.Duran did at lightweight what Marvin Hagler did at middleweight, plus won titles in 3 more weights and handed Ray Leonard his only loss anywhere near his prime. He's top 3 all-time P-4-P, and to be honest, if he hadn't quit against Leonard in the rematch, even if he lost decisively(the fight was actually pretty close when he quit), I would probably put him at #1, because even though Ray Robinson beat them, he still lost fights to not-so-special fighters Randy Turpin and Gene Fullmer, and to a smaller degree Jake Lamotta and Carmen Basilio, none of whom were really bigger than him(Basilio was much much smaller). But Sugar Ray never quit, so he gets the top spot, with Duran and Armstrong close behind at 2 and 3(either spot is justifiable for either fighter). And to mention the previously stated fighters, Whitaker, who i would have as the 3rd best lightweight, barely edges Benny Leonard in the P-4-P contest because of his success above 135. Gans should be without question a top 15 for everyone who knows anything about boxing. so the lineup for the best division in boxing history is: 1.Roberto Duran 2.Benny Leonard 3.Pernell Whitaker 4.Joe Gans 5.Ike Williams 6.Joe Brown 7.Carlos Ortiz 8.Tony Canzoneri 9.Shane Mosley 10.Alesix Arguello 11.Freddie Welsh 12.Bob Montgomery 13.Henry Armstrong 14.Esteban Dejesus 15.Beau Jack 16.Ken Buchanon 17.Julio Cesar Chavez 18.Oscar De La Hoya 19.Jimmy Carter 20.Ismael Laguna/Lew Tendler
