I love Mike Tyson but Wilfredo Gomez was the best puncher in boxing history. He was fighting 122 pounders you may say and Tyson was fighting 200 pounders, but remember that Gomez was a 122 pounder too. Pound for pound, he was the best among the two. Thats why I cant understand why everyone is "Tyson!!" and no one remembers Gomez. Gomez had 32 knockouts in a row, Tyson 19. Gomez had a weak chin, true (never as a Super Bantamweight, however), and Tyson in his prime got knocked out only once but also, Gomez had a slightly better record at 44-3-1 with 42 kos compared to Tyson's 50-6-0-2 with 44 ko's.
Naseem Hamed and Erik Morales have been close to Gomez as far as quality for a 122 pounder but Gomez was better, I would have loved to see him fight Hamed, Morales and iron chinned warrior Daniel Zaragoza, through. |

i never thought of it but i agree. gomez had better punching power at his weight and more of them in a row. who knows what would have happend if he trained and didnt get sick before the sanchez fight. not taking anything away from sanchez but, hey you dont know what could have happen even in the rematch.yes, there was a rematch coming that gomez was training for.

I agree that Gomez has been one of the best boxers pound per pound, with the best punching power. But lets not make any mistakes he didn't got sick before the Sanchez fight. He messed up, he underestimated a great fighter in his natural weight, who had heigth and reach advantage, and also had great punching power. Instead of training and preparing himself for the fight as he should had, he went partying with the Puerto Rican actress Johana Rosaly, thinking that he was going to dispatch Sanchez early as he had done with all his rivals. Big mistake, he learned a lesson the hard way.
