If "Sad Sam" was stil around, Viloria wouldn't have to fight anywhere else but Honolulu and filling the area with his fans. How did he get hooked up with Gittelsohn? What a shame, a fighter with his talent has to be fighting in Mexico and not in his home town.

Aloha George,

I hate to say it, but it really doesn't matter if Sad Sam was around. The fact is that boxing is dead. Mixed Martial Arts, like UFC, is what's popular right now.

And I don't think Viloria is going to do well in his current weight class. You got guys who can punch just as hard as he can, and who can box much better than him.

Boxing is not dead and the sweet science will never be replaced I am glad the UFC has wide apeal but it will never replace boxing as you are talking about apples and oranges two different animals

CNN i must agree with you MMA is bigger than boxing in Hawaii.but around the world boxing still rules you will never see a MMA Pay Per View topping a boxing PPV at least not yet its intresting to see what will happen in the near future though. Also i think Brian is a world class boxer and a hell of puncher for his weight class but its just so tuff at that weight class to be above and beyond everyone else.Just a question i know you have a right to your opinion but have you ever taken a punch or fight in your life?

George i Agree with you Glittlestin is a good manager but he builds his fighters records up in mexico get them title shots but doesnt take them to the next level.I think Salud had the same guy and Salud was a great champ could have been on the next level but was never propeled to that superstar status.

Bleed,
No need to swear. My comments are just my opinion, and I make them with the utmost respect.
For the most part, boxing is pretty much dead. The last "big" name boxer in Hawaii was Salud. And even he could not sell out the Blaisdell. The last guy who could pack it in at the Blaisdell was kickboxer Dennis Alexio back in the early 90's. I used to go to all of Salud's Hawaii fights in the mid 90's, and he was lucky if he drew 2,000.
The only really marketable boxer right now is Mayweather Jr. Currently, there isn't a popular/marketable heavy weight in boxing right now, and I think that's what's hurting the sport right now.
Also, you are right - Viloria did start out at 112 lbs. I think he even competed in the Olympics at 112 lbs. To me, at 108 lbs, he had a huge punching advantage because he's a strong puncher. I think at 112 lbs, his punching power will be nullified a bit. In a way, Viloria is a bit like Salud. The both can punch, but they are vulnerable to being frustrated and beaten on points by a slick boxer who can stick and move.
Just my thoughts - Aloha.
Yeah, I guess you are still living the old days huh? And you haven't been to any of Viloria's fight have you? Just to let you know Viloria sold out the Blasidell when he fought down here for his opening pro debut. Get your facts straights old man. And Jesus, was and never will be good as Viloria, why? Its because he never won a major belt, like Viloria did when he captured the WBC. Yeah, Salud won the smaller alphabet(so did viloria) NABF, IBC (crap title), WBO asia, and some other crap ones, oh yeah and he choked on all the title fights. To put this straight, Viloria seems more powerful at 112-115, because he doesn't need to starve himself. Man, do you even know boxing or what? Or have you even taken a punch at all?

That comment was directed at Bleed, who kind of went off the handle with a little roid rage at the end of his comment. Yeah, Bleed, I had to read to the end to see you snap.

True, I agree with you. MMA is definitely bigger than boxing in Hawaii, the conintental U.S. and, Japan. No question that in places such as Mexico boxing is still more popular. But, as you probably know, the UFC had a show in Europe, and they'll probably continue to have shows overseas to try and capture the audience.

Jesus did win a major belt - the WBA Junior Featherweight title. He never lost it in the ring. They stripped him of his title when he refused to fight in Columbia, which was the challengers home country. Go figure, Salud was the champ, yet they wanted him to travel to the challengers' home country to fight. They stripped him. He had several opportunities to regain the title, but he was never able to. Like I said, Salud was one tough dude - could really take a punch and give one too. Yet he often got out boxed and ended up losing the decision.

Are you THE Blaise Soares? The boxer? Man, if this is you, I used to watch you fight! I enjoyed your style - you were tough, and you always put on a great show!

The INC remembers Blaise Soares. Blaise Soares resides in Las Vegas, so that may be him. The INC tried to pursue him and represent Blaise as one of our fighters. We were just starting up and Blaise Soares was a hot commodity coming out of Hawaii. The INC has heard that he is retired and training fighters now. The INC knows the "real" Blaise Soares, the boxer from Waianae, Hawaii...way before Hawaii Football's Blaze Soares was around. The INC remembers a tough fighter with a style you don't see these days. Good luck in your endeavors Blaise.

Braddah, Viloria needs to develop a good bolo punch. All Filipino fighters are known for this punch! It just paralyzes your opponent.

The INC aggressively pursued Blaise Soares when he was an amateur. Top Rank eventually signed the talented fighter. The INC eventually signed Llewy Lopes, but injuries cut his career short. Soares came up with the likes of Fernando Vargas and De La Hoya in the amateurs. He also was a personal friend and trained with Diego Corrales here in Las Vegas. Soares is now a trainer and The INC has interest in backing his stable.
