Laura Mallory is not a Harry Potter fan, and she isn't giving up the fight to have the popular character taken out of elementary school.

"Gwinnett County Schools attorney Victoria Sweeny says that under Mallory’s reasoning school bookshelves could become virtually empty.

“Obviously there are witches in ‘Macbeth,’ sprites in ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream,’ witches in ‘The Wizard of Oz,’‘Alice in Wonderland,’‘Sleeping Beauty’-- the list goes on and on,” she said."

I REALLY do not care for Gwinnett. They just get newsy by being more fanatical than the rest of the state. More about news than life, that's usually a bad thing.

Wicca is a real recoginized religion, so if your going to bann books for having one kind of religion than you should bann all books from school library that have the mention of any religion in them.
The day any random mother can tell my children what they can read and what they can not read, will be a sad day indeed.
The Harry Potter books is what got my daughter interested in reading, then she moved on to the Narnia books and the Bridge To Tarabethia. Then she started reading other novels. Now she never goes anywhere with out a book. Even if it is a book on wicca or not at least she is reading now, which is something I thought she would never do. This set an example for her younger sister also who was not interested in reading, now her younger sister has found something that interest her and goes nowhere with out a book either. So hows that for reading a book that is supposedly filled with "evil".
Something that I pearsonally donot believe in, there are only people that are evil. The Devil is something that is made up entirly by your so called "Christian Churches". Some people should just let well enough alone it is people like that that give evil its name.

Banned Books Week 2007
Celebrate Your Freedom to Read
September 29October 6, 2007
"For only when free men write and speak truth will the exercise of arbitrary power be exposed and opposed."
Author unknown www.banned-books.com/bbauth.html .
I agree with this person regarding the importance of reading is concerned. I also agree with the fact we cannot hide from things with we we disagree.
In addition, children must learn how to discern for themselves. Take a look at the compound in Texas. Those parents and the group kept the children from choosing for themselves. We have yet to see the damage on those children.
When I was a junior in high school, my English teacher criticized me harshly for my work in class. In the summer of 72, he sent me to summer school. I despised him for not only putting me down, but he also did not teach me to appreciate the beauty of literature.
In spite of Mr. Slater's criticism in 1972, I finally received a BA in English in 2002, thirty years after I went to summer school for English.
It is possible, had I been allowed some space for self-expression and the permission to read different books, I may have earned my English degree at age twenty-four instead of age forty-seven.
As an adult in college, from 2000-2002, at age forty five, I despised having to read books written by drunks and drug addicts. However, in the process, I learned to think. We must also learn some tolerance, although I do not believe in anything goes though.
In this age of speed, I think it is time to get to know each other honestly. However, having an intelligent conversation requires the habit of reading, not only for information, but for knowledge and wisdom.
I applaud this mother from Grove City, Ohio and I would be glad to hear from "motherswillow" as I too live in Columbus, Ohio.

Satan is all ready there. Satan isn't being brought by a book or a person.

Teachig kids to only read 'approved' wirttings is teaching your child how to be a member of a cult.

Who then would be responsible for bringing Satan to the child?

Quotes from a 2007 Houston Chronicle article about this woman's little crusade - had me roflmao:

'At Tuesdays hearing, Mallory argued in part that witchcraft is a religion practiced by some people and, therefore, the books should be banned because reading them in school violates the constitutional separation of church and state.

'I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again, Mallory said.I think we need him.'

She can't make up her mind, can she...

Eve thought. She used her brains and had a thought. She made a CHOICE.

The only way your going to keep your children making such mistake, is making sure they never have an option to make a choice in anything.

Your child will not need cartoons or anything else to bring about the 'satan'. You can't stop your child from being in situations where he/she will have to THINK and make CHOICES. It comes from being human.

Even allowing someone else to make the choices for you, is a choice.

AS for the Adam and Eve story, to truly understand it, you need to read the older and more fuller versions of the story. The shorter Gen version leaves out a whole lot of needed information.

Simply put, before that eating of the apple, humans were on the same mental level as animals.

Think about it. animals don't feel shame for licking them selfs in public. Nor feel the need to wear clothes. Very few mate for life. Homosexuality is part of dominating and bonding. The list goes on. Some animals can be trained to obey their masters/owners.

It was called the Tree of Knowledge for a reason.

The 'pre apple' days are not all it was cracked up to be.

Again with this book burning crap? I don't want my children to be brainwashed with that non-science religious junk. It's OK to believe in a higher set of principles, but it is wrong to shove it down others peoples throats through the use of government power.

If you take them out of the schools it won't make a difference. They will still be in public libraries. If you don't want your kids to read them tel them not to. If you kid(s) respect you they will listen. If it is a teen, then they will defy you and read it anyways, like most rebellious teen would. I have no problem with my son or daughter reading them. I have read all of them and my son is on the 6th book now. He is not sacrificing animals or worshiping the devil. There are worse things in the world to worry about than Harry Potter. How about gas prices or the economy?

For those people opposed to Harry Potter, do you let your kids trick or treat on Halloween? Halloween is a Pagan Holiday and the real Christian holiday is November 1st since they did not want to celebrate the same day as the Pagans.

Why even bother this story is yrs old and miss mallory may God bless her lost her request and her federal appeal yrs ago. She herself has quietly slipped odf to obscurity and no one has heard a word from her for yrs. Accepting the govt's decision. No one is trying or has been able to shove anything down anyones throat. It is ultimately up to individual parents. And individual parents will reap the benefit or consequences of their choices. I myself would never allow my children to read it. Once they are adults they must decide for themselves. I also never allowed them to trick or treat either. One being dangerous and two being familar with the origins i objected to the holiday wholely. And i remember the pins in candy bars and razors in apples from my youth. Never knowing that some satanist groups and black witchcraft roups believed hurting children pleased their master and gave them evil powers. Not to mention the new threats. Sexual deviates and other weirdos who are attracted to children. The whole subject in my opinion needs to be avoided. Just a byproduct of a screwed up and really wicked world.

You might want to read the Snopes article on pins and razors in apples - most have been shown to be pranks or hoaxes by those reporting them. No "satanic" groups "pleasing their masters". Just some sad nut-cases getting their rocks off on either playing victim or playing god. And the gullible scaredy cats that gobbled up the rumors like so much candy corn.

How do you reason with ignorance like this? Obviously another bible thumping idiot who has no idea what they are talking about.

I have read the whole series and found the books to be very entertaining, well written and a good story about good vs evil.

Satan is a Christian invention to help squash the competition and keep the congregations in line. If it isn't Christian it is Satan. Satan wasn't even part of the Christian religion until after the Crusades when the church decided it was time wipe out the competition. How do you destroy a religion? Demonize it's Godesses and Gods. Thus most drawings of Satan resemble the great Pan.

This story ran on 10/3/2006. Why is this being trotted out AGAIN.. It will run--the last time with over a 1000 comments. It usually gets Scott involved and he espouses his considerable "knowledge" and the topic is totally lost. Why do these old treads continue to be cleared and restarted. Nothing has happened since 2006. I then do we really care what the Mallory woman thinks?
