Thank you for the great photos. They are a great addition to the stories I heard for years from my grandfather (Robert "Bob" Futrell)(aviation machinist)on the SANTEE from Operation Torch to after Leyte/Samar.

My dad, Tom Tilley, was on the Santee. He talked a little about it. He told us about the kamakazee attack and also being torpedoed. He still has shrapnel in him that would set off the metal detectors at the airport. We lost daddy Sept. 14, 2010. We got to go to one of the ship' s reunions with him years ago. Daddy was proud of serving his country. And I am very proud of my dad. He was a wonderful man with special friends whom he served with. Daddy always said the literally fought together to live. He thought a lot of his shipmates. Daddy was an electricians mate. I'd love to hear from anyone who has family that served with daddy.

My dad was an AE1 on the Santee. Sounds like our Dads were in the same department. Dad was a Aviation Electrican 1st class in Torpedo bomber squadren VT24,what was your dads job on the Santee's electrical department?I have a question Susan have you got any information on what CSAU #5 was and where was it stationed in June/July and August 1944 Just before the Santee went to the Pacfic. That was the Santee's last European patrol.I need to find out about this unit as my dad was stationed there. I need to know if it was a combat unit or just a support unit.If it is a combat unit dad is elegible for the Africa European Middle eastern medal.Any help would be appreciated. I have a proffestional Investigator working on this but so far he can not find this unit.

My dad served on the Santee. He turned 91 this past,May . He has plenty of stories to tell as you can imagine. He continues to tell them to his three grandchildren. You were all a class act!
Thanks for taking care of each other and giving my dad such great memories to share.

My Father, William Ten Cate, was a fire controlman 1st class on the Santee, and saw action in the battle of Leyte Gulf. Unfortunately he passed away in 1979 of Lung complications, so I don't have many stories. Any detailed accounts or memories would be fascinating.
Any chance at all that anyone remembers Bill "Pappy" Ten Cate?
Just found your post....2013. My dad knew him "He was a nice guy. All good" says my 91 yr old dad, Rudy Forslund. He just ran upstairs , as fast as 91 year olds can, to find his picture. If you want, I can send pictures.(Kath.h@live.com) So your dad was Pappy? I remember that name from when I was a kid.

Hi, Dan

Sorry to hear your dad passed. So is my dad. He remembers your dad very well. I remember his name too thanks to the navy stories he tells us. God bless.

My dad, Harold "Hank" Hansen, served on the Santee but I'm not sure of the dates now. He talked about being a machinist, fireman and getting some air time with a couple pilots. He talked about escorting Eisenhour from the states to England, cruising the Medeterrainean then down around Africa to the Pacific and Leyte Gulf. I know somewhere at my mothers are dads service bars, a commendation for action at Leyte, a membership card for the Neptune Club. There is also a phote of the entire company on deck and another of dad and a few of his buddies letting of a little steam at a bar. Hank passed in July 1992 in Des Moines Iowa of complications of surgery.

Correction it was Roosevelt they escorted not Eisenhour. Too, they sailed the Panama Canal to join the Pacific Theater.

My father was in fire control as well. I wonder if they knew each other? Unfortunately, my dad passed away in 1979 so I can't give you any stories first hand. If I hear anything about Dick Sigfried I'll send an email.

<quoted text>Linda you are right all of the pictures of the Santee damage was from Lete Gulf. In the picture of the Torpedo Bomber crash, I belive the man standing on the deck with his back to the camera is my Dad AEM/1C Harold Smith possibly known as Curly or Smitty. His job would have been getting what was salvagable off before it was jetsoned. the picture of the Kamikizai probley was also Lete Gulf as that is the only time she was hit by one.
My Grandfather, Frank Imper, served on the USS Santee. I very much appreciate those photos, I have some of them; but others I've never seen before.
Thank you.

I think my father, Robert Bowman was on this ship (USS SANTEE). He was on the USS Charger before that. He died right before I was born in 1950 so I'm trying to track down as much information as I can. He was and aerographer Mate 1C according to his discharge papers. He was discharged in Oct., 1945. Does anyone remember him? Thanks for any information you can provide.
Bobbie
My Dad AEM1 Harold Smith possibly known as Smitty or Curly discharged in Oct. of '45. I have a question for you. Did your Dad take pictures of the Santee crew? If he did I have several pictures that he took in my passion and a lot more in a scrap book of WWII that my sister has.

My father, Robert B.'Red' Fentriss, Photographers Mate 3rd and then 2nd class, took many of the Santee damage photos during and after the Kamikaze and I-56 submarine torpedo attack. My father is deceased. I know of two Santee men, on board the ship during the attack, who are still with us today. There is a 49 minute joint BBC/PBS (I think)video called Timewatch "Kamikaze". This video is about the Divine Wind (Kamikaze) and the Japanese pilots who flew the planes. However, there are many segments of Santee men being interviewed regarding their experiences on the 24th of Oct., 1944, the day of the attack and the days following the attack. dfentriss@hotmail.com

Mark...there are two Santee books that have hundreds of pictures and stories about Santee and her men. They are written by Reverend (Doctor) L.'Bill' Simmons (deceased). The first is "Goddess of War - U.S.S. Santee - CVE 29, an illustrative history (submitted for Copyright, U.S. Library of Congress, May 18, 1990. The second is "War Stories From the USS Santee" (also submitted to the U.S. Library of Congress). I checked the index of authors for the second book but your father was not listed as one of the authors. The first book has no index but it has many pictures...your Dad may be included. dfentriss@hotmail.com

My grandfather, Dick Wolford proudly served on the ship. I had the privilege of attending a number of the Ship's reunions with him before he passed. Quite a few of his old shipmates called him "Tiny". We have quite a few photographs, and would love to see if there are any others out here. My children were just asking about WWll, and their great grandfather's service. We would love to hear any stories or gain additional photos/ information we can. Its very important this history is provided to our kids!
