I am 15 years old sikh boy and belong to a sikh family who although followed sikhism but was not too orthodox about it except haircuts. I always admired to have short hair and used to feel embaraced by my look. All my friends had cool haircuts while i carried a joora and a patka. But my courage was vitalized when Karan came to live with us. Karan was son of my father's best friend just like our family member. Karan belonged to a hindu family and hence had short hair, he cane here for his graduation. He lived in my room and was aware of my problem. He suggested me to maintain my hair in a pony abd cutt off the extra portion below my neck as by it i can feel better and also tie a patka. So i went with him to a saloon. As i sat on the chair i felt numbness but karan encouraged me. The barber tied a pony and cut iff my hair, now they just reached my neck, when i saw myself i felt relieved. Karan then further arose anxiety in my mind that after a complete cut i will look awesome and in just a spur of moment i agreed. The barber smiled and began his comb and scissorwork. In a while there sat a smart boy in the mirror who once had an irritating joora. Now i could feel the air through mu locks and rub mu fingers and hand on the tips of the cut hair. Awesome.

<quoted text> This is a good incident. And i am happy your mother supported your brother and actually did the 'honours'. She is a great understanding mom! But why is your post in Roman English? Your post says your place is in USA - so english should not be a problem with you. What time was it when your brother had a haircut? Hairdressers r available at most times of the day. Do you and your mother also have haircuts? It would be interesting if your mother took your brother to the hairdressers for his first haircut (actually second, ur mother did the first one). Do post how did the haircut of your brother go and how his school reacted? It is interesting to read such initiatives. Good luck!

@ Mani: Congrats for sharing the episode. I am sure you loved being n the barber chair. I remember it being the most relieving experience ever. And great for you mom to support you and your brother. I fully agree with her thet,' baal comd aur wash karan di duty khatam.' She is free and with her short hair she is enjoying her time. Your brother vi hum khush hai te tuhade ghar vich khushian han. this is what is needed in life - happiness. buzz cut is very necessary once you cut the 'jooora' so that the hair can grow back naturally. I am sure your chachiji is pleased with the pioneering effort of your mom. Ek choota visit to saloon for hairbonding made such changes te saare khush. Tuhade dad ne accept karna hi paina hai. He has no options. Best Wishes in future - More friends and easy life. I also like your choice of supporting your brother with a buzz cut. The way the clippers run over the head and mow away the hairs is so relaxing. No bad hair days ahead. And the soft fuzz feeling is so good. No wonder when your mother ran her hands over your brother's buzzed hair she was happy. Uhna ne sochiya hona ki main hun tak apne aap nu te bache no kinna aukha kita hai. Par hun theek hai. Good luck and keep posting such supporting stories

@ congrats for you courage and new look. Did your parents accept?. How do you feel now? Have your friends liked your new look. Karan has supported you and you will never forget this good gesture of his. Go for a second styling cut and make it very short as with the first cut the hair is difficult to maintain. When you wash hair at home and a few days after the haircut the hair is not easy. The barber 'sets' it but in natural style the hair needs time to style. This is because of the long time it was tied as a 'joora'. The best thing is to cut it as short as possible so that it grows back in natural style. SO go back and get a second cut as soon as possible. Best wishes and good luck in your new experiences.

No!
But why does he wants you to cut hairs, stay as a pure sikh himself??

You should not get hairs cut...do you want ?

@ Kaur ; It is worth considering your husband's choice. Do you want to have shorter hair. there is o problem if your husband is turbaned and you have short hair. Maybe he is gauging you and may opt for a change after you do so. If you talk it over and then go for a shortening of length before a real short style, it may motivate him. Do take suggestions from some friend who has short hair on the style options that you would have. To shorten length and get trims is not a real bad idea. Many are going in for it. It is now more a personal choice. What is your take on haircuts for your children? How open minded are yuo on that? Is you are not much disturbed by their choices, you should develop some courage and ask your husband to accompany you to the salon and get it over. Hope we are able to help you. Do refresh your post so that we can all benefit. God luck.

@Kaur: Maye he will come by slowly. His presence is proof enough that he supports you, and will stand by you. If you are comfortable with short hair, I am sure you will be able to encourage him enough in days to come, to get haircut. In Mumbai, I do not think it matters much, whether you have short hair and he has turban. The trennd is changing in other cities too. It is personal choice and courage to stand up to people's talk and your convenience. Good Luck, for your new look!

@mani: you asked me about myself. Well it is a long story. it began in college when one o my classmate got a haircut. he turned out to look good. After a few days another boy got a haircut and then the girls in our class told me ke main vi haircut karva lavan. pehlan taan main bahut dar gayeya, par jadun uhnan ne bahut vari keheya taan main soochan lag payeya. i discussed with my friends who told me it is cool. Ek do vaari main barber shop te gayeya vi , par vapas aa gayeya. mainu usde scissors te razor tun afraid si. But then in the holidays main apne ek school time de frend nu milan layi gaya. It was summer time and in India summer is very hot and trouble some. One evening we were sitting on the open and he mentioned how cool it was with the air running through his hairs. he had a short haircut specially for summers. Then expressed my wish and also told him about the earlier incidents. He took the initiative and took me to a barber shop. i was really afraid and also feeling very jittery. but the barber shop was free and my friend asked if the barber would cut my hair. The barber first asked me. I sat on the chair and did not answer; but took off my turban and when the barber saw my 'joora' he was surprised. he wanted to be sure if I wanted a haircut. mere friend me usnu dassiya ke haircut kar de. mere vaal khulan tun bina hi barber ne scissors naal joora nu cut kar ditta.mere vaal saare paase spread ho gaye. short and falling near my earsnd light ness on my head. I felt sad but sat very still. The barber then wrapped a white cloth around m. I did not know it was called cape, then. then he cut my hair short like a school boy. usne sprayer naal saare vaal wet kar ditte te vaal cut kari gaya. pehlan long hairs girde agye ; phir small snips mere cape te san. He tapered the back hairs with a hand clipper. Pher usne razor(ustra) naal mere neckline nu shave keeta behind the ears nu vi shave keeta. Side burns taan nahin si kite. Unse beard nu trim keeta and asked if I need a shave. But i did not agree. mere friend ne mainu chair ton utha ke changi taran dekheya te joor naal jhappi paa laye. I felt so different. Aapni turban main apne naal lai ke barber sho pton bahar aa agya. Mere friend ne barber nu pay keeta. In about half hour I was a different looking person. Hun main khush taan si par could not still accept that I had got a haircut!
I was happy and my friend was happy too. After some more days of staying with my friend, I also went to the barber shop a second time. This time I did not get afraid of the scissors and also asked for a very close cut. I was happy that no more summer problem and more free time. When I came back to college, everyone was surprised and the girls in the class were so pleased. As I was having shortest hair everone anted to rub their hands on the soft fuzz. We partied and I was real happy. We wre all hair cut surds in the class now!
This is more than 30 years now and it was more difficult to get parents nu understand karvauna te family nu agree karna. but somehow the accepted.
Hope you like it mani friend.
Then I helped many others who wanted haircuts but never forced anyone. it is a real gat feeling. par mere haed shave karan nu jee karda. I have not got it done. But aapne bacheyan nu 2 or 3 thimes head shave karta. they were so happy ke head te koi vaal nahin!
