@Gold- Me v aahi soch reha.. Why is she ( Punjabaan ) so much interested in minimizing judda into juddi.. Instead of shortening them why don't he get rid of his judda.. This will resolve his problem completely..
@also Gold (Aligarh): This suggestion by Punajbaan to reduce weight of 'jooda' to make it 'joodi' is very good. Actually many families do not like to see boys with haircuts for various reasons. So this method is resolved by the mothers and/or barbers to cut off the hair from the centre of the head and leave longer hair on the sides. it makes an impression that the person is having a jooda and the person is happy that he has a reduced weight in his head as well as the liberty of wearing a cap/patas when he feels. Also having a head bath, especially in summers, is so convenient. I think it is a most practical way to remain in the sikh stream and also to enjoy the barber experience.
I remember that there were a few boys in our hostel who had adopted this method and were happy with it. When the hairs inside grow out, they went for a trim and the 'joodi' was to size.
I also remember a classmate of mine whose mother started this as it was a problem to wash and comb his long hair. he was ever grateful to her. he went to the barber shop every two weeks and got his 'haircut'. He actually inspired many more to get into this mode. So I think it is best if there are issues in the family for a proper haircut.
The haircut can be done when situation improves!
Good for sharing this method, Punjabaan.

try the method to get your 'jooda' into 'joodi' as suggested by Punjabaan. Go to a barber shop and explain that you want the centre hairs off - close clipperred to the scalp - and the sides left untouched. A lot of hair will fall off and you will feel relief. Also your parents will not really object as you still have a 'jooda' to show!
Living in US maybe you will have to explain the entire process; because in India the barbers know what to do. Maybe you can tell him that a modified Chelsea style is what you need. In this case the sides (outer hairs) are to remain untouched.
Go ahead man and enjoy the summer. Relax and get weightless!

Easy, isn't it! Enjoy light head days. it is a refreshing experience when you go for a clipperring in the centre of the head at the barbers!!!

you are right Punjabaan. It is easy to cut from the centre and not reduce the length. If the length is reduced then it may not be possible to tie the jooda.Lovely can do it at home too!

@lovely: It is easy. Just open the hairs of your son and comb then backwards like a ladies. Then spread out the hairs so that you are able to differentiate the hairs at the sides which would be making the jooda later. Then take some hairs from center of head to make a tuft/strands and cut them with a scissors from near the scalp. This will reduce a lot of volume from the centre and leave the longer hair at the sides. be careful not to cut too much onto the sides. After cutting the center hairs, comb the hairs forward as if to do a jooda and try to make a jooda. See if the size is ok for you. If you find that it needs to be less, then again cut some more hair from the center.
I think you can do it home and it would be nice for your son. Why do you want to reduce the jooda at age 9 of your son? Is it too big at this age. Usually it is not very big at this age. Once you do it then you may go to the parlour later after a week or so to get it shorter/clipperred from them in the centre itself. Then the stylist would know how much to cut. But why can you not go to the barber (nai)? Many do a good job of it. At home you can do it in stages by cutting off some hairs everyday while you comb the hairs each morning of your son. This way your son would love it too - gradual lessening of weight on the head. happy experimenting lovely! DO you go to parlour for haircuts?

@Punjabaan: it is really sad the cousin has to be teased. It is appreciable that you come from a hindu family still feel bad about it. Do his cousins - boys and girls, have haircuts?
Is your husband a cut surd?
If you are close to the cousin, politely suggest to him that he may reduce his hair volume by cutting some hairs from the center of his head. it would help reduce some weight off his head and also there would be less teasing. If his hair is too long then he can also shorten the length so that it makes a jooda. This reduction in length and volume would also help him to tie a good style turban. And he would be happy especially in the Delhi summer. He may also wear a cap or bandana for regular use. Ir is easy.
Good luck Punjabaan and may your suggestion find favour with your cousin. Do let us know.

@ Punjabaan: Thank you for the reply. It is not nice to tease anyone because of his jooda. But since he has already reduced the size of his jooda then it is OK. I must appreciate that your husband loved you so much that he had regard for yur fmaily and chopped off his hairs! You loved him with a jooda but maybe he thought that it would be bothersome for you to explain to your familiy or friends. Did he share about his haircut or he came one day with hair cut? Did you help him style his hair therefater? AS for you son' shair you may explain to them thatyou would like to keep his juddi for some time at least. When he begins school then after some time you may take him for a haircut. Then it would be easy for him and for you also. In this way your wish of a juddi would also be OK. Later your son may also know that he had a juddi when he sees the pics. Maybe you can continue with his juddi till primary school and then go for haircut. Many people continue till high school with juddi/jooda but later adopt haircut.
I think your husband will agree.
Best wishes and keep sharing. It is a source of motivation to others.

@Lovely: It is good that you want to respect your mother in law's views and also not visit a nai now.
OK let me explain. Pehlan tussi usde waal ladies wangoon wah deo.
Phir usde waalon nu khilar deo , jivan hair oil lagaondi ho.
Hun, sir de center chon, kuch waalan nu lae ke cut deo.
Ek vari ch kuch hi waal cut karo.
Hauli hauli usde sir de centre chon waal chotte chotte kar deo.
Aase paase waale waalan nu bilkul na chaedo.
hun usda jooda(juddi) kar deo.
Please take care that you do it a little every day or a sudden reduction is size will make your mother in law suspicious.
And when you do it little by little everyday there is no reason that the hair will be cut more and there will be no jooda.
I hope you will be able to do it.
Even if you have long hair yiou can go to a nai. Many nothers take their son to a nai for hair cut.
May be after you get his volume of hair less, you will like it and then can do it without fear.
Then you may also go to a nai for regular trimming as the cut would be known. Agar thore jahe waal jeyada cut ho jaye they will grow back again.
But be careful to be regular in the cutting.
No they have no videos on youtube.
Hope for the best. You are sucha thoughtful mother. What does your husband say? Have you discussed with him? Better not. Do the reduction in weight, then if he asks tell him.
Keep in touch
