1 years ago, I had a patka, and was a gr.10 high schooler. But then everyone wouldn't really talk to me like anyone else because of my patka. Then kids started making fun of me because of me. Even physically hit me. Telling the Priniciple/Teacher helped, but not really. I really wanted to cut my hair, since Grade 1, but back then I really wanted to cut it REALLY BAD when I was in Grade.10. Then I found this forum. For a whole month I've been on this forum to get tips, courage, etc. To cut my hair. Then I did cut my hair, and went back home. Mom did not care a single bit, brother was shocked, and my dad didn't talk to me for like 2 weeks. But now, i'm in Grade 11, and my life literally flipped. Everything is awesome. This is true, when I was in Grade 9 and 10, I had horrible grades, failed 2 classes, almost failed another, but now I have awesome grades. Even my guidance counsellor thinks i'm doing better ever since my hair cut. At school lots of people love me. All the people who are very known in the school like me, and they are my friends. I know some of you thinking I am bragging (sorry if you think), but I am not, i'm just telling how a simple haircut changed my life. If you guys would like to ask any questions or would like to talk, you can message me on facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/EkmSohal
Don't be shy, just say anything you want. I know how hard it is and these things need to be talked about. I'll be on this forum for a while to see if people responded, so I will also answer stuff here.

Say this. I want a haircut. But explain why. Nicely, and calmly. It took my months to confront my father. But he kept on saying no. So I told him, im going to get a haircut. Not asking his permission though. Just telling him.

Ok, I am 14 year old girl in high school. I know how this feels like. For all you saying people think I'm not a true Sikh because I cut my hair. That's not true...but it's not right either. For example you are watching someone get bullied, not joining the bully is good but not helping the person is also bad. I think you guys need to learn why Sikhs keep their hair. And hey there good and bad people of all kind even Sikhs, but your the one that chooses to do the right thing. Knowledge is power, and what's in the inside that counts. If you learn this you will realize who is your real friend. Who is going to be with you till the end. I just wanted to give some advice. I'm no one to judge, and if you think you have made a mistake. You can fix it. Be strong. You can disagree, spam, say I am nutty all you like. I just want to share this out there. Be strong, and do what ever you like. But remember the truth.

kripya dhyan rakhen ki yeh jigyasa hai. sikh dharm ki aalochna nehi. unhaircut ke peechhe logic kya hai ? kai aise log bhi hein jo ki sikh nehi hein kintu "SHRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB" me poori aastha rakhte hein, Gurudware jaate hein, maatha tekte hein, to kya unki shraddha sweekar nehi hoti hogi ? Maine kai aise santon ko TV par pravachan karte dekha hai jo Guru Granth Sahib ka sandarbh dete samay Ya Guru Nanak devji ka nam lete samay apne sar par apna shaal ya angochha rakhte hein. khule sar kabhi Nam tak nehi lete hein. Vastutah kya baat rahi hogi ki-- Shri Gurudev ji ne sar par kesh rakhne ki baat kahi hogi ? wastvik karan kya raha hoga ? kripya koi bhai bahen samadhan karne ki kripa karen.

i hav argued wid my parents but they are not allowing me to decrease the length of hair.... they are saying that i can go for hair color, bangs or even i can get a sidecut........ means one side of head chopped, as in fashion these days..... wat u people suggest??

@Sarneet Kaur: I consider it that your parents have actually understood your dilemma and allowed you a haircut. When you go for a side cut/bangs you can also get the length reduced to an acceptable length. Also to begin with it is nice feeling to get onto the saloon chair and get the bangs done. The crunching sound of the scissors on your hair is so nice to hear. You may also get the parlour lady to get your hair short around the ears as it would be covered by the length all over. Experimenting is fun! And after a few visits you can talk your parents for the shorter version. Go ahead Sarneet - you have the green signal! Let us know how you go about it.
