What democracy?

USA is becoming a laughing stock to the rest of the world, due to GWB's mindless one person take over. If any previous pres had pulled the crap this guy has, there would have been outrage! But GWB has so mesmerized and convinced the dumb they have so much to fear and to just trust him... we are screwed!

It's a known method of control by authoritarians, to creat fear, promise protection, then stomp on the rules to be the great protector while gaining unpresidented power. HItler did it.

It's taken 230 years, but it seems we have forgotten our past and what our forefathers went through to create a great nation. Only to watch civil rights groups and politicians shred our constitution to pieces just for their own agendas. This country has forgotten we as a people are the forth branch of the government. We have the right to stand up and take our government back out of the pockets of big business and crooked politicians, and once again put it in the hands of the people were it belongs.
I read the above excerpt and read the news and feel history is beginning to repeat itself. My God helps us as a nation become united once again.

If Clinton would of set aside, something like 750 laws, the REpublicans would of lynched him. So why don't they hold the same standard to this president? Because he is one of their own.

Sounds like GW is very careful about what he puts his signature on and expounds and clarifys his views on every one. Presidents should have the
line item veto; instead he makes it clear to all his views. It is the mark
of responsible leadership. Historians will certainly appreciate his extensive writings and the thoughtfulness behind them. When we as individuals make decisions that affects others do we not explain how we arrived at the decision and why? This thread sure carries a lot of criticism for something we should all be doing and we are not making history.

Where ever did the phrase, Line Item Veto come from? There is no such thing people. The Presidents job is to either sign the bill into law or veto it, sending it back through legislation for it to be changed, or a 2/3 vote to cancel out the veto.
As for the extensive writings and thoughtfulness. GW did not write these bills, legislation did. So what would he have to explain? The President is not a Judge or Prosecuting Attorney trying to interpret a law, and it sure in heck is not right for him to try and force his will and feelings on others by saying this IS what this law is going to mean then in the same breath say he has the right to bypass the law if he want's too. He may be President, but he is still a citizen of the USA and no one can put themselves above the law. "For the people" sure isn't in the Presidents interpretation is it?

You obviously do not know what a signing statement is.
Rather than veto laws passed by Congress, Bush is using his signing statements to effectively nullify them as they relate to the executive branch. These statements, for him, function as directives to executive branch departments and agencies as to how they are to implement the relevant law.

Presidents have been seeking the ability to strike items from bills that they do not agree with mostly appropriation bills, budgets etc. It's called a line item veto; many presidents have sought it; not just GW.It does not exist but presidents will continue to seek it's passage. A robot could sign or veto bills. Apparently the SC does not agree with your above viewpoint. It has been determined the president has every right to use signing statements to clarify his interpretation and the right to bypass the laws. You would take this right away from a president? Of course a president is not above "the law" as you say, but it turns out he is very much within the law.
