Hi Trish!
The best tips for Optifast are:
No straying from the shakes/bars/soups, otherwise you WILL get hungry.
Everything gets easy by the 3rd day...hang in there!
Drink plenty of water!
Visit the forum and other weight loss sites often for inspiration.
Be prepared to lose a lot of weight....this is the FUN part!
:)
Welcome and good luck with your start!

Hi Ava:
Transition is tough, but hang in there! For a time I wished I could stay on the shakes forever. I do have one suggestion for a breakfast shake instead of making a traditional breakfast. That has helped me ween from the program of shakes and still have the on-the-go convenience. I use the muscle milk from Costco and add a banana and milk. Tastes good and feel familiar.
I have to stay away from the bars or any type of power/protein bars too as I have the same response: That I feel I need more and more. Hang in there! Keep up the good work! It gets better.
Thom
Thanks for the thoughts on transition, I will start next week or so.

Well, this is my second week. First, I had a bit of a headache the first week; that was managable. Secondly, listen to what your doctor and counselors say: space the product out, weigh and measure everything and keep track of your water. Finally, it takes a couple of days to get aclimated to the program and the hunger really goes away. I'd be happy to talk more...m.notarangelo@comcast.n et

Hi Trish:
Welcome to the board and to optifast. It really does work. first few days are the hardest you and I can do this together. Day one here... one of many day one's I have had a difficult time starting again and again. Weighed in at 188.7 It is actually a easy program to be on but I say what gets in my way is the garbage I have in between my ears. I believe we all have reasons of WHY we eat and unfortunatly mine gets in the way.

Hi Mike:
Welcome to week two!!!! It will be a lot better than week one ;-) Are you doing a lean and green and 5 or 4 shakes? Your right water is really important.. I also love my tea because after awhile of losing my body tends to get cold without all my layers of instalation that were covering my body. I'm not looking forward to the headace for a couple of days but I at least know that it ends.

Hi everyone:
Looks like we have a lot of new people here and I just wanted to suggest a couple of things to you which helps me keep on track.

One think I have done is I have a small calender and when I am 100% on my shakes I will give myself a smiley face on the calender.... I know it is kind of kids stuff but after a few weeks or a month you can look back and see all the smily faces.. I get stickers so each one is different. I also write down my weight on the calender every Wed and also the amount I lost or gained.

Another thing I do I have a small little note book and I will write the calories I eat in the book and also the calories I burn through exercise or walking. I wear a pedometer I like use the Omron pedometer and it will keep track of your walking, calories, walking arobically amount of fat burned and there is one that has a program that will hook up to your computer and keep track of all your walking. I subract my calories I walked from what I consumed in shakes etc..

For those that are on transition I found a wonderful scale that is called EAT SMART NUTRITION SCALE If you go on their website there is a demonstration of how the scale works. it is quite amazing and has codes for every food there is. And even packaged foods you can input the food values into it and it will calculate your cereal etc.. right down to the carb, cals and other nutrients. It also say you want to have a plate of green beans, chicken and rice you can ad each one seperatly onto the plate and keep it on the plate and it will give you your entire meal's value of what you are eating. If you dont want so much rice just take off what you dont want and it will automatically reweight it for you. Also say you want a glass of oj included in your meal you can take off the plate ad a cup to the scale and it will measure the oj and inclued that in your meal as well. The scale is pricy about 75bucks but it is worth every penny.

Hope we will all have a great day and will stay on plan....(Geeshh.. Im talking to myself there lol)

Hi, I started my Optifast 900 on Feb 6 2010, so far I have survived hunger, lighthead, and constipation which I see nobody has talk about.:)
So my weight los journey has been good so far my concern is how mych should I expect to loose. I am currently taking 4 shakes a day with some vegetable broth with zero cal.My scale tells that I have lost close to 3 pounds. Is that normal?? Should I expect more or my progress will be slow??
I started at 180.6lbs and currently I weigh 176.4.

Welcome to the board.... And to optifast. I would like to ask why you are taking vegetable broth?? Is this something you want to take or your clinic sais is okay.?? My guess it is high in sodium and I would stay away from it. Also most plans are 5 shakes a day 800 calories a day. Anything less than 800 is way too low in calories and right now you are taking in 640 do check with your clinic to see if you are getting the right amounts of the things they want you to get. Also go onto the optifast website and they will talk to you there about how the program is run by them.

Constipation is common however benifiber will help with that and can be put into your shakes. This can be purchased over the counter. Increased water intake will also help with the constipation I get in 4 liters a day it is a lot of water and you feel like you are running to the ladies room constantly. Perhaps you can get more water in if you were to cut out the soda's. Try tea too.. That also counts as water.

Weight loss will vary between individualls but it is not uncommon for the first week to loose about 10 lbs maybe 6 the week after then 2-3 there after and that also depends on how much you have to loose. If you weight 300lbs your numbers will be greater than if you weight 180 your numbers will be smaller and it could be a lot smaller to just keep to the program though and dont eat food and you will be just fine.

Thank you Sheri,
My reason to go on Optifast is my highblood pressure, despite being everything normal along with sleep apnea. I am on 900 cal a day which is four shakes a day, I am also allowed to have 20 extra cal but only in liquid form, like broth. Currently I am trying organic vegetable broth with zero cal. Shall try hard to cut on soda & increase water.:)

You might want to check out the sodium content of your vegetable broth it might have a ton of sodium in it. Which will make you retain water in your body. Or if your wanting something hot Optifast has two soups Tomato and chicken and those would be better choices. However some clinic's wont allow the soups until maybe week 6 or there abouts. I do on occasion heat up the chocolate shakes I put some torani syrup in it like nutmeg etc and it is like a hot chocolate yummy. To make your water go a little way try adding some crystal lite or walmart has a generic brand which has zero calories in it where as crystal lite has a few. Why have any when there is a brand with zero?? lol..

Sheri....how far are you from goal? Could the problem be that you are already looking "normal" and the drive to look better is waning?
I remember that when I did this before, the accolades from others who saw me losing weight was part of what kept me motivated to keep going. Once I got down to my goal weight, people got used to seeing me at that weight and the oohs and aahs slowed down. Then I realized it was just ME and the FOOD and MAINTENANCE! Some of the luster wears off over time. That's a huge reason why some dieters regain the weight...it becomes something to continue to drudge through without any of the "glamor" of the initial weight loss. Something to think about that might get you back on track? If you still have a ways to go till you reach goal, let your focus be a personal CHALLENGE to yourself to NOT be like others that gain it back. In other words, prove your strength to yourself!! Make THAT your center and focus this time.

Hi Cute Gal!
Welcome to the forum!
:)
Is Optifast 900 something new that you can get in Canada (more calories per shake)....or was that a typo and you meant Optifast 800? I know that some countries have different formulas than we do.
I agree with Sheri....check the sodium in that broth! If it tastes good, it probably has too much sodium in it! LOL!
Personally, I think 3 lbs. in 4 days is pretty darn good, BTW!:)
I had problems with diarrhea in the beginning....then about half way through it was CONSTIPATION!! One thing that you have to think about: you are eating much less "food" now than you were. It makes sense that you have less bowel movements when your colon is not filled up like it used to be. That said, it's helping me to take Colace (stool softener). At least I don't feel like I'm giving birth every time! LOL!
Sorry if this is TMI for everyone! Just thought it might help Cute Gal.

Hi Mary,
Why going so extreme...., You don't sound to have more weight, my understanding was Optifast was only for those who have a BMI over 30 or have 50 pounds to loose. Are you doing this program under the supervision of a Physician or its self driven.
You fall in normal weight, my suggestion try GYM. Talk to you Doctor
