Optifast 800 calorie diet

Dear Tina and Luv,

Optifast is a great diet. But the first 5 days are hard. I made crystal light popsicles, drank gallons of sugar free iced tea, etc.

For me sticking to the same flavor shake everyday and no bars seems to work best. It is that stimulus narrowing factor. When I add in other flavors or textures it seems to rev up my appetite and I don't need to get that going. ha ha ha

Prepare yourself with lots of distractions like walking, maybe buying something new, books, etc. I don't normally play video games but do play when on this diet as it helps me win at something and keeps my hands busy and out of the kitchen.

I like to take L-gultamine which is an amino acid that helps with sugar cravings. You can buy it at GNC. When I take this my craving disappears. Works best on empty stomach. I take 500mg once per day. After the 5 days on plan has passed I rarely need to take it. I don't know if it works for everyone but it sure works for me. I was happy a friend gave me that tip.

Also helps me if the mix your own shakes are super cold. I chill the water, glass, and anything else I am using. If i am not too lazy I blend it in the blender. Most days I use the shaker bottle.

Do consider mixing in some benefiber because it will keep you full longer and help make sure you can eliminate normally.

In 62 days I lost 52 pounds. I was 278 pounds to start and am 5ft 1 inch tall. So I am still really obese now. Need to peel off some more.

Immediately get some pants with elastic would be my other tip. I found stretch leggins and those lovely full elastic jeans walmart sells to be perfect. All of my fitted pants quit fitting within 3 weeks time! They were literally falling down and shifting around as I walked.

My mom also lost a lot of weight on this plan. It is convenient, portable, and easy to comply because you are either on it or not. After the first week you can fly on autopilot.

I am restarting optifast because i like the results. Focus on the prize.:-)

Glad to see some new people on the forum because we can all encourage each other. I know I need a lot of encouragement because weight loss is such a journey.

Cheers,
Kay

I forgot to mention but Optifast Australia has a free website that is fantastic because it has motivational videos available. The videos are created by their dietician. The Australians follow a different protocol than the USA. Australians get 3 packets a day of shake mix plus some green veggies and 1 tsp of oil. They can buy the optifast in the drugstore too. Lucky them.

Anyhow I have done both formulations and prefer the American one because I was less hungry. But the videos rock as does their website. It is all free to log into. Just google it.

Hi Noona,

Wow I'm jealous. I need to start exercise but with my knee injury I have been lucky to walk around recently. I jumped right into the old folks golden version of Zumba that I bought at Costco last July and whammo injured my knee immediately with one of the dance steps. Had to fly out to see ortho doctor because here in Iraq there aren't good doctors. Ortho guy said Zumba injures a lot of people. Anyhow have been trying to get it all recovered since then. It brought to light the underlying joint problems I have and didn't know about which are caused by the wear and tear due to obesity.

I'm getting ready to restart the optifast. Wanted to restart before but lacked the will power. First 5 days are rough. I'm going to grin and bear it because this past month I have lost no weight at all on my own. But to be fair have eaten everything in sight then go up 4 pounds do a few days on shakes and drop the 4 pounds and then eat up again 4. You get the picture.

But December is almost here so time to go again for another 12 week cycle and see what happens. I'm going to have to superglue my lips shut when I make it back to the USA on vacation Dec 22!!!! Will leave just enough space to get a straw in for the Optifast. ha ha ha just kidding in case anyone thinks I have found a revolutionary new weight loss approach.

Ok fingers crossed for luck to all of us and just think how happy we will be on Jan 1 when others are making resolutions to lose weight. We will be patting ourselves on the back with our weight loss and thinking about other resolutions like keeping organized ha ha ha

Bye,
Kay

You can buy the packets of powder on ebay or amazon.
The diet is only for people who are very overweight.

It is suggested to have medical guidance on this diet because sometimes people have a bad reaction or need medication adjustment as a result of being on this diet.

For people who have only 50 - 70 pounds to lose they get 5 packets a day. People who are more overweight require more packets than that. The danger is in not taking enough for your weight because people have died that way. You may need to take fiber supplements to be able to eliminate normally while on this diet.

Another issue with the diet is some people develop irregular heart beat or suffer from lack of potassium.

Exercise is also limited on this diet. I think limit is 30 minutes per day and something like walking only. Nothing intense.

I get my blood drawn once per month and had an ekg at the beginning and at the 6 week point. Even though I do not go to a clinic for optifast I go to a local doctor and have these things done.

At the end of 12 weeks there is a very specific transition plan back to regular foods that needs to be followed.

One other caution, if you do this and then have a day where you eat wildly you can develop gall stones suddenly or other bad side effects.

A safer version of this is where you take 3 packets a day and then have a sensible meal with 6oz protein, 1 tsp oil, and combination of raw/cooked low starch vegetables.

I like Optifast and did 12 weeks on it. Now I am going to do weight watchers until holidays finish and then I will do another 12 week cycle on optifast.

Good luck to you.

Hi everyone. Im very new to this I started this on 3 days ago. Im currently 58.6kg I know alot of you will say thats not much and I agree. However im very short and small framed. I on average weigh 50kg. I went through a phase where I just went 'stuff it' stopped working out, stopped everything and just kept eating. I gained 8.6kg and felt absolutely horrible. Felt like I had a cloud over my head, wouldnt go out because nothing fit me and started to sleep alot. Will optifast help me? Im asking because every review I read everyone else has a much much higher goal to loose ( good on you all by the way I hope you reach your dream goal it is very doable) has anyone my weight tried this and successfully lost weight? Am I putting myself at a higher health risk?

Hi Betty,

In the USA this diet is never used for someone who is as close to goal weight as yourself. The recommendation would be to increase exercise to build muscle mass. More muscle increases your basal metabolic rate which means you burn more calories. My friend is a registered dietician and she advises people who are only a little overweight to try first eliminating all beverages with calories, no milk, no alcohol, no fruit juice, no soda/fizzy drinks. Many people then lose 5 or 6 kilos without changes to their diet. When someone is only a little overweight it means that their diet is mostly working and just needs some small tweaks.

I would never do optifast if I only needed to lose a little. It is not worth it. But that is my opinion. One other thing, a lot of people i know started out being just a little overweight and then dieted with the end result being more and more weight gain. Dieting is a vicious cycle. If I could go back in time to when I was just a little overweight like you I would not have dieted knowing what I now know.

Anyhow you will make the right decision for yourself. Good luck and maybe talk to your doctor or a doctor experienced in the use of Optifast to find out more information.

You can read the clinical protocol for how Optifast is used in Australia and NZ online and it clearly gives the situations under which it is approved for use.

Bye and good luck,
Kay

my doctor had to remove me from Optifast for a few weeks. I only lost 2 more pound in my 3rd week. I am happy for the result. I am doing my own diet now lets what is going to happen.
what is a good diet after the Optifast I wanna loose 2 pound a week??
I have a very difficult time hearing about diets that people go on that they know can harm them. I think the big thing we need to learn is that it took time to gain the weight, so it's going to take time to lose it, safely. And doing it this way, it will stay off because you will have learned a safe way to eat the rest of your life, and exercise.
I am losing weight with the Venus Factor. I found it at http://inshapenow.net . Safely losing 1 1/2 pounds to 3 pounds a week.
It's an excellent program with a system that is unique and I can carry on throughout my life, with a few alterations. It used a special calculator for figuring out what calorie count you're looking to eat, from week to week. The community is great! The support, fantastic.
I've added a supplement to this called Leptiburn that I found at http://inshapnow.net/video . It tells you why some people have trouble losing the weight, and how you can fix it.

I am so excited to be on this journey with everyone.

Good luck!

Hi Everyone, I have finally finished reading about 5000 posts! I am currently just starting Day 4 of full fast - just RTD shakes. I am 53, female, 5 ft 5 in, starting weight was 223, goal is 140. I have already lost 7 lbs in 4 days and am very pleased. Knock on wood, I have not had any headache nor hunger at all and am easily drinking 124oz water daily. Optifast feels very good! My one question for everyone though, is anybody having trouble sleeping? I have only slept 2-3 hours a night (I generally easily sleep 8 hours) since starting. My health is good (aside from being obese), no meds -- I'm wondering why sleep is so difficult. Anyone?

Hello lovelies!
I'm starting tomorrow - My biggest struggle is that I work at a workplace with a cafeteria that everyone eats at together, so it'll be hard to opt out of that. However, I'm on vacation for the next two weeks so I'll hopefully be over the 'craving' phase before work starts again!

Let's get this forum back up to the activity levels that it was at a few years ago!

How is everyone doing this week?

It's not bad at all. It's my 3rd day first day lost 4lb 2nd day 3. Not bad for me I think it's easy bc I just drink the shake without getting food ready. Yes I'm lazy I hope that don't last.

I'm on day 9, on those super hard days I just find something to take my mind off of it. I've gone to the Food Addicts Anonymous website and done some reading, I might take a walk, go to sleep if I can...anything until it passes. Hang in there.

Hello Everyone,

I'm glad to see so many posts as hearing your stories encourages me and I sure do need encouragement.

This diet works well but it is a challenge to stay on plan at times. The first week is always very hard for me. The longest number of days I have stayed on full fast is 62 and it was a miracle for me to make it to 62.

Some things that help me when the cravings stirke include playing easy video games like bejeweled, etc., going for a walk to raise the endorphin levels through exercise, taking lglutamine supplement which kills my sugar cravings, and taking a hot bath for relaxation.

I have also found that I can have super will power in a social situation, sit and watch other eat, etc. but then I go home and feel sorry for myself so I eat in private. As a result of being aware of doing this I now try to turn down all social invitations involving food or shape the invitation so we are meeting for "coffee" at a time that would not be a regular meal time so the person with me does not eat in front of me.

I also had to pick a few colleagues and friends who can hold me accountable if there is a work social occasion which I can't miss and has food.

I have currently been off plan for 2 months and eaten everything I wanted while back in the USA on vacation.(I live overseas). Now I am getting ready to restart in a few days when I get home.

Let;s stick together and encourage each other. This plan does work and it is not pleasant but the results are fast and that motivates me a lot. Considering I still need to lose 125 pounds fast is good. I divided my weight loss into phases. Phase 1 is finished and I lost 50 pounds and then regained 20, net loss of 30. In phase 2 I want to lose another 50 pounds and not regain.

Fingers crossed for luck. On a wing and a prayer.:-)
Forgot to mention the mix yourself shakes taste much better when whirled in the blender. It makes the texture and taste more uniform.

Could someone plz tell me if I could go to curves on this diet or not. All my friends go to curves and they want me to go but I'm not sure if that would slow down my weight lose or not.

HI Kay: I love BKK, one of my favorite cities in Asia. Good luck on Phase 2, do you put some sort of plan in place for yourself as your getting reading to go from fast to food. Have you seen the online transition plans, might help prevent some of the regain - it's tough. Best, Desiree
