Skopje Makes Another Outlandish Attempt to Claim Foreign Territories
http://www.topix.com/world/macedonia/2009/10/... FYROM has cooked up a new scandal on territorial issues concerning Greece and Bulgaria. While on a visit to Australia, the FYROMacedonian Prime Minister, Nikola Gruevski made a statement that could hardly be interpreted as anything else but territorial intentions against the two countries, according to Neos Kosmos edition. On October 26, meeting representatives of the FYROMacedonian community in Australia, Gruevski reportedly urged the Skopjan community inÿ Australia to be united. "Macedonians in Australia enjoy a unique opportunity to live together with their Aegean, Pirin compatriots, which is not the case in their mother country, Gruevski said, appealing to them to not divide on these grounds as there are no Vardar, Aegean, Pirin Macedonians, but only Macedonians," Mr Gruevski was quoted saying in a MINA (Macedonian News Agency) report. Gruevski's statement was at once countered by Bulgaria's President, Georgi Parvanov who went to Australia a couple of days later and Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov. Bulgarian PM, Borissov who was in the European Council in Brussels yesterday recommended that Macedonia should get informed on the values respected in EU and NATO, as the Bulgarian News Agency reported. "They are for Europe without borders, Europe of good neighbours, Europe where problems are not solved by means of such statements but with peace, understanding and tolerance," Borissov pointed out. President Parvanov described Gruevski's statement as "unacceptable", reported BTA. Parvanov, who arrived in Canberra on October 28, in what is the first visit by a Bulgarian Head of State to Australia, was asked to comment on Gruevski's statement and he said to him Gruevski's words were not only unacceptable but a sign for territorial claims expressed by Macedonian PM. "I accept Gruevski's position with dismay," Parvanov said. "It is unacceptable especially because Macedonia has the ambition to become a European Union member," he said. According to him, Macedonia had to follow all EU membership criteria which demanded that controversial issues be left aside from the EU. Bulgaria's President said that Bulgarian support for Macedonia's EU membership efforts was "not unconditional" and depended to a great extent on Macedonian behaviour and the complete withdrawal of such territorial claims, according to BTA. http://paper.standartnews.com/en/article.php... |
