If you are here on a temporary basis (such as in the Military for 3 or 4 years) you might have a bank account else where such as with USAA or First Command, both banks not locally based but with extensive online banking ATM's ect...If you want to use a check - Food Lion says they have to write your SSN on the check. They have the ablility to look it up and validate it without writing it on the check and thus having your address(local), acct number and ssn all in a nice package for ID theft. Walmart doesn't do that, Loews and Home Depot doesn't do that, Fresh Fields doesn't do that. Just Food Lion...why take more chances on ID being stolen than you have to...

In response to this post...

Food Lion does not require you to write your SSN on the check. You can use your driver's license number.

The only time a SSN is required is when you want to cash a payroll check. We need the information to put into the computer so it will go through the next time without any problems.

And what did that have to do with Bottom Dollar?????

Food Lion (a.k.a Food Line)...every time I shop at Food Lion, I'm always waiting in a long line because they never have enough cashiers. Lets hope Bottom Dollar hires more cashiers.

Being in the Military I happen to have a licence from another state, as a lot of Military do - they would not use it. Checks have local address on them. I tried, they would not use it, wrote to the company and they said too bad. I did let them use it one time - but still wanted to put it on every time I went to the store - I gave up and shop else where now. as far as what does it have to do with Bottom Dollar? Same Company - same policy? Or will it be changing?
I contacted informationsecurity@foodlion.c om
They were nice enough, just couldn't help as it was company policy. Maybe new one is different..?

I will never support food lion. They do not offer enough kosher foods, foods that fresh market, Giant and other groceries offer. Plus I can save money at the other places, every penny counts when you are buying a lot of food.

Two points to make....first is that, having worked in retail before they do require either drivers license # or ssn. Many places do not accept out of state checks, as they say it is harder to prosecute if the checks are bad. It does not make sense that they only way they would accept your out of state check was with your ssn.
I also agree that, whenever I have shopped Food Lion I have had to wait in extremely long lines and customer service was very bad. The store in question is going to be turned into a Bottom Dollar. I will give it a shot...however if it remains the same per customer service then I will go five miles out of my way to a different, slightly higher priced store. I have tried complaining...basically the people I have talked to don't give a damn either.

So, you have to bag your own groceries at Bottom Dollar? What makes that different from any other Food Lion? At the one in my neighborhood, you usually have to go through the self pay line and ring'em up, too!

This sounds like a good idea, but Food Lion need to increase merchandise. I live about the same distance from a Food Lion, Farm Fresh, Super WalMart, Super KMart, And 9 times out of 10 I cannot find all items to complete shopping list at Food Lion. Their check out lines are awful,Can never go in and come out with quick checkout.

I don't like the self check out. The machine nearly always needs an employee's assistance and the checkout lines are awful at the regular checkout lines. Food Lion is a Food Dog when it comes to customer service at checkout. Your ice cream is melting while you are waiting for the line to move.

Your FL has a self pay line?? How cool is that?!?!

And for the check writers - step into the 21st century and save yourself some paper and ink - USE A DEBIT CARD!!!

Actually i work at Food Lion store #10 and we do not require SSN to be on a payroll check to cash it.. We're located in Headquarter city, so if we were suppose to be doing it we would have been in trouble a long time ago..

They require a driver licence - if you have an out of state lic (as most people in the military do) they want to put the ssn on the check. They don't require this at Wal Mart, Lowes, Home Depot or Fresh Fields...I even emailed the head quarters and this is the policy. would be nice if they were able to use the lic or use ssn without writing it on the check and having your address, ssn, and acct number all on one document. Would it be possible to just verify ssn# or enter it in your computers with out writing it on the checks?

I recently started shopping at Food Lion in Yorktown Va. Used to shop at the Farm Fresh in Grafton. As soon as the lines get more then 3 people deep, they call for all available associates.I've seen the Store Manager, Stockers,Produce People and Meat Cutters all at the same time bagging in order to get customers out very quickly. They are very good about it and obviously it's a #1 priority at that store.Great place to shop.

Can't hack Food Lion. Prices are way too high. I just Bought some Bryers Ice cream at FL. Paid 5.39 for it. Same thing at Walmart is 3.13. I try to shop local stores but I can't take that much difference.

The food lion I live near you have to wait in a long line too and its mostly behind people buying 40's. Every food lion i have been to seems nasty. I only go there if its something I really need and don't want to drive out of my way to the commissary, walmart or farm fresh.

Well as you have noticed Food Lion does'nt have the word "super" in front of it, so we do not have as many regristers or empolyees clocked in at a one given time to take the orders. Food Lions are usually not busy so when it is the empolyees freak out cuz they don't know what to do and as far as the baggers there usually is'nt a bagger on the clock all the time because as I stated it usually is'nt that busy, so Food Lion would be losing money for paying someone that does'nt do much all the time.

Daily Horoscope for December 30

If you've been surrounded by people during the past few days you welcome the chance to have some time to yourself today. It's a wonderful excuse to do something really indulgent in private, such as scoff a whole box of chocolates while watching a favourite film on TV. But make sure you destroy all the evidence before everyone else comes home!
