The flare-up in violence in Shiite areas of southern Iraq and Baghdad has yet to alter U.S. plans to withdraw more combat forces this spring, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Monday.

Democrats are stuck with their "cut and run" policy left over from Vietnam they are such cowards. Those who refuse to stand up for their country will pay a great price later. Why can't everyone see the need to stop the spread of Islam, look at England, Holland, Russia, turkey everywhere Islam is there is chaos or Sharia law. Look around and see the insidious spread which starts with foot baths in airport, prayer rooms in airports, clerks not allowing people with liquor in their checkout lines, little by little we allow the scourge to spread and it starts with not stopping them in Iraq and Afghanistan. I pray for our country and those who hate it.

In other words: The "Surge" was not a success. I could have told you that a year ago and we could have saved hundreds of lives and about $100 Billion. It's time to get out. The Iraqis are no friends of the US. I think they are the enemy the way they're acting. Either way they don't deserve our help in this fight. They won't do anything for themselves.

Of COURSE this is another Vietnam. I learned from a counselor a valuable old saying: "YOU CANNOT SAVE YOUR FACE AND YOUR BUTT AT THE SAME TIME". That's EXACTLY what we did in Vietnam, and EXACTLY what's going on in Iraq--SAVING FACE. Gen. Betray-us is only a puppet for the war criminals Bush-Cheney. Wars go badly when they are as ill-conceived, as this one. Has nothing to do with cowardice or bravery, but greed and immorality. We will deserve the horrific outcome we get when we get it, and we WILL get it.

Although American troops need to be gradually withdrawn any deadline or timetable could prove to be a disaster not only for Iraq but the whole region. But Iraq must take on a bigger role in running its own affairs. The United States can stabilize the region and help those governments, but it can not stay there forever propping them up. Hearing the early testimony this morning it looks like the U.S. will have some troop presence in the Persian Gulf for many years like it has in Europe and Japan. There has to be an American presence there to guarantee that the oil supply lanes remain open. If they are ever disrupted there will be economic turmoil throughout the world.

Every criticism of this war is so overly simplistic and without any comment on truly viable alternatives. The President of the United States of America is an easy target for critics ANY TIME HE TAKES REAL ACTION EVEN WHEN AGAINST A COMMONLY RECOGNIZED ENEMY. We have become such spineless whiny babies and rant and blather tired old anti-war platitudes and comments totally devoid of any solid solution that would leave our long term security intact.
Mr. Bush said in his speech to congress, shortly after 9/11, that action must be taken and that the war on terrorism and against our increasingly powerful enemies, would NOT BE A SHORT TERM STRUGGLE. Further, he suggested that we (all Americans) would need to withstand the noise of our well-meaning, but mis-directed, critics and stay the course, knowing that we are in the right and left without any alternative.
I knew then, that he was right and defined the critics more precisely.

However, take a poll of our ENLISTED troops, re-enlisting in record numbers, whether they feel that their time and sacrifice is in vain. Ask the children of Iraq if they want us to get out and leave them at the mercy of an even more controlling dictator, sure to fill the void. Ask Angelina Jolie if the "surge" is working and what she found on her visit there. While Angelina and I sit on different sides of the fence, politically, more often than not, she made points with me by admitting that she had no choice but to praise the beneficial effects that the surge had brought to the innocents of Iraq.
Finally, listen to news reports of a suspicious, ever increasing surge of attacks on our troops leading up to the elections. I'm going out on a limb here (sic), and suggest that these attacks will fall off to zero, once the election is over. What a shocker, huh?

I wish people like you would find a reason to be on Earth other than complain about being on the Earth.

Vietnam was about an entire generation unwilling to fight for freedom in a small obscure country. We have a volunteer military now with plenty of men willing to fight in Iraq.

But again we have arm chair warriors like you, who complain if it's raining one day and sunny the next.

We have a moral imperative to open our checkbooks and spill our blood for the millions of Iraqi's.

Hey Florida Jim, I'm a Democrat and served 3 deployments in Iraq with our great Marines! More than willing to die and kill for the Red, White and Blue! However, your "chicken-hawk" "gop" heroes in washington had the chance to serve in Vietnam but didn't!

No, this is not our war. The Iraqi's were given the chance at freedom and they chose enslavement. The right-wing reactionaries rip on the French but they were never as lame as the Iraqis.

As an American, it gives me great pride to know that we have field commanders like Gen. David Petraeus and the military forces which he directs. This nation has a splendid history of helping people in other countries who are prostrate before dictators and brute, murderous force. As a military veteran, I salute General Petraeus.

I don't know. If this war drags on, the Chinese might be protesting the 2012 Olympics in London and even the 2016 Olympics in Chicago.

Now THAT would be embarrassing.

Who are you kidding? The Shah of Iran; Marcos in the Philippines; Pinochet in Chile; a slew of Mexican presidents; Bautista in Cuba.

Need I go on or will you just walk over to your local library and pick up a history book.

Petreus is a good general and this is a well deserved promotion. As a student of Vietnam and counter-insurgency, his troop surge, while maybe not a master-stroke, helped alleviate some of the damage caused by Rumsfeld's almost total reliance on technology over boots on the ground.
