Orlando Magic blow lead, lose to New Jersey Nets

Full story: Orlando Sentinel

It's a new year, but the same curse looms large. The Orlando Magic extended its home-court woes, falling 96-95 to the New Jersey Nets tonight despite holding a double-digit lead most of the game.

I WAS SO HI ON THE MAGIC,JUST LIKE THE START OF LAST YEAR...NOW I SEE OTIS SMITH MAKES REALLY REALLY WRONG DECISIONS FOR MAGIC..HE IS NOT THE GUY TO LEAD THIS FRANCHISE TO CHAMPIONSHIPS...WHEN HE LET DARKO GO..I KNEW ORLANDO WOULD STRUGGLE,BESIDES THE BIG PLAY FROM HOWARD...AND NELSON IS NOT THE POINT GAURD TO WIN IT,OR ARROYA...AND WE STILL HAVE A LOT OF NEEDS..SUCH AS ANOTHER BIGGIE,A PURE SLASHING TWO GAURD,AND WE NEED TO REPLACE POINT GAURDS IN ORLANDO....WE HAVE TO MANY SMALL FORWARDS..WE COULD TRADE TURK OR LEWIS FOR ANOTHER KEY PLAYER AT DIFFERENT POSITION....SOMETHING DRASTICALLY HAS TO HAPPEN TO MOVE FORWARD................

That game was tough to take on many levels:

1) The officiating was horrendous, just two examples from the first quarter: the goal tending call on D-12 when he didn't even touch the shot and the no call on Jameer's drive to the basket. That's 4 points right there.

2) D-12's foul shooting. We needed every point and he gave away a bunch of them at the line last night.

3) Maybe calling Hedo's number too much. The other teams prepare for us and know what we are likely to do. They knew Hedo would be driving on that last play and made it impossible for him. SVG needs to have other options in that situation. Lewis gets the big bucks. He needs to be tried.

4) Defensive energy - Was I the only one for the last 8 minutes of the game as we were getting out-hustled and out-rebounded shouting at my TV set, "Put Augustine in there!!!!"

There was plenty of blame to go around on this one.

Why does everybody is always complaining about our PG, have you seen that all other teams have a SG and we don't. Or everybody thinks that Bogas' 10ppg are good enough.

actually I thought JN was just unlucky last night. he didn't blow the lead for the magic, if you watched the game magic actually missed several wide open 3 point shots while NJ made their run. on top of that, JN was doing the right things penetrating but just did not get the calls. I am not saying JN is better than CA or the other way around, just that you guys need to give JN a break, he played ok last night.

Now I can only hope that SVG was running experiments last night, to see how Evans handles the close game situation, because otherwise I have no explaination as to why Dooling didn't play.

For the last shot, I am in NY so I get only the nets announcers, and everyone seems to know that Turkolu is taking the last shot. And he did. I am not saying it was a bad move, considering he did have a mismatch with Kidd guarding him, and he seemed to have the hot hand, but we could be a little less predictable. I actually hoped SVG called a play for DH, so what if he got fouled, he'll make them when it matters. shaq does all the time.

The magic are just skating right now there has been at least two games were the magic won when they easily could have lost. then they go in to the fourth quarter with a 13 point lead and blow it to an awful new jersey team. In a game where Vince Carter was 6-18. This isnt good they must become a beter home team in the playoffs for the first and possibly second round they will have homecourt advantage and must be able to win on there floor. Cant get to upset with turk he won two games for us(chicago and miami) so i give him a pass but were was Rashard he disappeared again. Turk i believe he is a free agent after this year. The magic have to resign him no matter what he asks for which will cripple them even worse in the future(thanks alot Rashard"moneybags"Le wis and nelson's extension). Personal i think nelsons a very good player but he is distracted his father died during the off season which im sure he hasnt gotten over yetand he has nagging injuries he needs time to heal and mourn, in the mean time arroyo and dooling should get the blunt of the minutes till he is 100 percent. I don't see the magic collapsing but i dont think they will be a 1or 2 seed either like a first thought after the great start. Lets hope that im right about this one

Turk has 3 years left in his contract at almost 8 mil for year, a cheap price for the way he is playing now.

Dang, what a bunch of losers. The magic have just won 4 of the last 5 games and lose one game by 1 point and listen to all this crying and whining. Some of you need to get a life. You make it sound like other teams are going to just roll over and play dead.

Too bad Rich De Vros doesn't share Huzenga's philosophy. Finally disgusted with failure and mediocrity he brought in Parcells to clean house. The Magic don't have it nearly as bad as the Dolphins, but cleaning out their dummy of a GM would surely help. He can't draft, keep talented players, make a decent trade or sign sensible free agents to sensible contracts. He can't even keep a coach after signing him. Donovan didn't dump the Magic, he dumped Smith! But the Magic love their business as usual. Too bad it's always the fans and the city that have to pay.

Okay, Fred, time for your Midol.
There are 82 games, and at some point, the Magic are going to get it. Their rhythm is different from any other team in the league because they've played more games and made their west-coast trips. Their schedule has been front-loaded with difficulty.
Everyone is concerned that we can lose easy games, but the truth is that every team in the league gets ready for us like they get ready for Boston or Detroit. Although with our young team, they actually come in with confidence that their game plan will work. It's been done a few times.
Here is a question for you whiners: How many times have we been blown out this year?
Three times, by quality teams only. And since the end of November, we've lost by more than 9 points only twice. The other games decided by 1, 2, 4, 6, etc points means that those games were up for grabs until the final 2 minutes. Free throws at the end of games extend leads, so a 7 point win is usually decided in one run up the court, then it goes to foul shots out of desperation.
The quality is there. This team's mental toughness and confidence is being tested early in the season, when we can afford it. We've won more of these 2-minute drills than we've lost.
I will take Boston in a 7-game playoff. We beat them once, before they appreciated us. They will be the ultimate test. I think this team can go to the final round against the Celtics. We may not have what it takes to beat them this year, but if we do, the west coast opponent will be more a task of will than skill. Boston is better, at the moment, than anything they have going.
On the other hand, it could all change in a day.

Why dont we get rid of players we're obviously not going to use or be of use to us i.e, Garrity, Cook, Gortat, sad to say but Augstine too. Makes me scratch my head.(Scratching head now)

P.S
Times like these I really miss that Tony Battie guy. He gave us 10+ pts 8+rebounds per night. He's the power forward we're missing

HURRAH--someone who gets it. Excellent point about the season and where the Magic really stand. What the Magic really need is someone to replace Battie at PF so Lewis can play more small forward and everyones minutes can come down some. The Magic are in practically every ball game with a chance to win at he end. I agree that the Magic and Celts would make a great series because we match up against them very well, we just don't have as much experience as they do but in a playoff series they would get that experience and then we can add a piece or two for a championship run. Since you think good basketball, I have a question for you. Why do you think we have trouble with the Hawks? Is it they match up well with us or we just over look them?

you lost because you sent out your defensive, athletic, long armed, extreme hustle player ariza to the lakers for a bench warmer softy named cookie...he rides the pine while airza is starting ...look how good ariza has become for the lakers in just a short time....man i am so happy we got rid of 6-9", 250 lbs. lead weight who doesn't know how to elevate or play defense

Nanningbob I feel for you, because you are not facing reality. In this case the Magic are 6-9 in their last 15 games and 7 of those games were at home. Right now I am happy that the Magic are on the road where they have a better chance of winning, but once they are finished with this road trip they have 26 home games and the home record for the Magic right now sucks.
Yes I would love to see the Magic get back on course and start winning both home and road, but right now I don't see that happening as long as SVG keeps on going that way things are going. He needs to change his ship or this ship is going to sink.
