Another incredibly inaccurate rant from a misguided Newsday columnist. You must have been spending too much time with Shawn Powell.
If any city other than NY and LA can handle a large influx of gang bangers and drug dealers, New Orleans can. The police, especially the ones that are left, are more experienced with dealing with guns, drugs, drunks and murders.
Who are the Las Vegas police experienced dealing with? Prostitutes and tourists.
If the NBA All-Star game bring out such a bad element, what makes you think the whole thing shouldn't just be scrapped, or maybe just annually held in Salt Lake City?

In my three visits to New Orleans, two of them Super Bowls, the police ( local and state) disappeared at 1230 AM. It turns into NYC when David Dinkins was the mayor. You can see the perps eyeballing the drunks in the casino on Canal Street. Don't get me wrong I will always reccommend a visit to by any adult but get off the street before the animals take over. One conviction in a year is a MAJOR clue. How many credit or ATM cards get swiped there during each event? This is not Branson, MO or even AC. Grannies stay home!

RE: NOLA Resident
Even though this post was 4 years ago, just wanted to weigh in for record's sake.
The crime that happened during the Vegas All Star Weekend had absolutely nothing to do with our Police Department, and everything to do with the fact that the games attracted all of the gangs from around the city (yes, we have a lot, not just "tourists and prostitutes"), plus many of the gangs from LA and Phoenix. The Strip, quite literally, was filled end-to-end with a dangerous element.
I think it was perfectly reasonable to assume that when Las Vegas, who handles MILLIONS of people at a time on holidays like NYE and who prepared from All Star, had problems, then a weakened New Orleans should have been concerned.
