I wonder how old they live in the wild?

Frank never got the chance to live his life in a wild habitat, breathe free air and live as he was meant to do.
I may be in the minority, but I am coming to hate zoos. Elephants, lions, tigers, apes........we have stolen them from their native lands, keep them caged, put them in circuses, keep them as pets.
I have come to think zoos should be abolished, while recognizing that endangered species may have their last stand in a zoo. There is no easy answer.
RIP Frank, free at last. I will never go to another zoo to see caged animals, or to another circus to see elephants dancing and tigers jumping through flaming hoops.

I grew up with these gorillas. Frank and Debbie Especially. I wish they lived out their lives in chicago!!!. They were special and I will always remember them as part of my life. We should cherish these animals and remember the joy they brought to us when we were growing up! I loved them and will miss them. I believe they would have lived longer if they were never moved? God Bless! sometimes I think we would be better living with them instead of humans.:)

Frank, like his companion Debbie, who died 5 years ago this month, were instrumental in my continuing love of gorillas and I'll be forever blessed and privileged to have known them both. Without them, Gorilla Haven wouldn't exist.

To Frank - thank you for loving all those babies you didn't sire, but who you took under your strong and protective "wing," teaching them how a wonderful silverback protects his family. And for reaching across species to include me and so many others in your life, showing us how much we can learn from you and your brethren.

I know people in Chicago and Louisville will be joining in the many who will mourn this special guy.

Rest in peace, dear soul. To everyone at L'ville and Chicago who did so much for Frank over the years, my appreciation and deepest condolences. And thanks to Bill Mullen for the appropriate tribute to a very special soul many were privileged to have had in their lives.

I think zoo veterinarians and other workers do a lot of good for these animals, and I understand how keeping certain animals in captivity can keep endangered population numbers up, and so on. The staff at zoos such as the Lincoln Park Zoo are obviously very intelligent, educated, and kind people. Still, when I go there and observe the gorillas and then the animals in the primate house, I can't help but feel completely sad. The gorillas especially always look wholeheartedly depressed, as if they know completely that they are encased in walls of glass and being stared at. I'm sure this is a simplistic reaction, but as researchers tell us these animals capable of empathy, with memory, too, I feel bad that they're there.
