Where would we be? Maybe we would be living within our means near our extended familes...and raising our kids to be respectful and considerate of the needs of their neighbors.

Pretty much the same as now. We have a crippling national debt that we have to pay off from all of the social programs that our so called leaders enacted in the 60s and 70s.

The difference now is that this is a pay as you go system. When roads need to be built, they need to be paid for. They are expensive and traditional funding won't do it anymore. Our so called leaders lack the backbone to raise the gas tax.

I do not believe for 1 minutes that Daniels is being "graceful in retreat!"
He has proven time and time again that he does not care what people think ---or want. I think that his Republican peers are finally finding their backbones and making it clear to the Gov. & his staffers that they will NOT support anymore lame-brain initiatives because they want to be re-elected in 2008 even though it is clear that Daniels will NOT be!

daniels will do or say anything to get re-elected. He now has a record to run on and it is clear he does not care what people think. Don't be fooled again.

Just goes to show even Mitch can only stand so much of fighting the ignorance of Pat Bauer and his do-nothing anti-everything caucus. Oh...and the anti-progress citizens of this state don't help much either. Pretty sad what 16 years of democrat control can do to the mindset of our citizenry.

Now let's see where would we be if Daniels had stood with what he first wanted on time change? We would be on Central Time like we belong.....

It's always the democrates fault. You republicans make me sick. If I remember correctly it was a republican that took a balanced budget made by a democrate and blew it complety out the door and put us so far under that it will take our great great granchildren to get it payed off. And he is still spending like a drunken sailor. But that's ok a republican did it though so that makes it right.

FYI...it was the Republican legislature that passed that budget. Clinton just agreed to sign it.

Actually if I remember correctly, Daniels balanced our state budget in two years after being in debt for the previous 16 years, while Democrats held the Gov's office and the House.

JHD Columbus---Interstates were not built in the 60's and 70's for economic developement. Instead, Eisenhower saw how Hitler had built the autobahn for the use of the German military and he pushed it for the same purpose in the USA. In time of war all interstates would be shut down for all commercial traffic and be used by military only! Economic developement is merely a by product and not the reason interstates were built!

It's amazing how a non-partisan article results in such partisan discussion. I guess, regardless of his actions, people will hate Mitch just because of the "R" after his name.

Also, all comments about hating Bauer because of his "D" and what not are expected, and will not be refuted.

In partisanship,
Yours Truly

Your history lesson is correct however I do not recall the system to ever be shut down for that reason. It's commerce that has used this military system to move people and goods. Large city residence appreciate these systems. Farmers rely on it. We are a growing country and need to grow the systems to support our future.

Did you forget we needed to fight a war after 9/11 -- and forestall a recession? Just like Democrats to pick their own evidence and ignore reality, just like the new Democrat Congress is doing.

Daniels' graceful retreat is just that: a retreat, not declaration of defeat and withdrawl. He now has a powerful campaign message: move Indiana forward into the future with me or stay stuck in the not-so-glorious past with Pat Bauer and his Democrat minions.
