Full story: Hartford Courant

Several hours before he dipped another toe into historic waters, Kobe Bryant looked up sleepily while getting a pregame therapeutic massage.

Let's not overswing here. Wilt averaged 50 points per game for an ENTIRE SEASON.

he was ahead of his time though back then. Most guys really weren't that good that was his height and he was taller than about 95 percent of the league. And the shorter cats just couldn't even reach the ball when he had it raised. Think about if kobe was taller and bigger and could wait under the basket and get the ball within 5 feet of the basket, only need to make a move or two to get to the rim what he could average. he needs to do his thing from the perimeter and work his way in against 2 or 3 player waves sometimes and his three pointers would never have been attempted by wilt. Anyways Wilt had a huge physical advantage in his time...kobe has created his advantage just by being the hardest working player in the game to get to where he is. He is the Tiger Woods of Basketball...no one is in his talent league.

No doubt wilt is in a class of his own, but like willsmooth said he was a monster in his time besides russell giving him some competition who else was there? you know how hard it is for a guard to score 50 points, let alone 81 in a game with no overtime like boe has done, not even michael jordan did that of course kobe has to shoot more cause his team is just not that good but still its one thing to want to score and its another thing to be able to have the skills, legs, and energy to do it, the rules were different back then everyone played to score very quickly so it was made for wilt. I dont take anything away from him he worked hard, and he was in great physical shape, and even today he would be the best center in the nba, 50 point a night scorer no but best center yes.
