This new rule strikes me as ripe for arbitrary, capricious, and inconsistent interpretation by game officials. It is definitely unfair to Coach Calhoun and other coaches who have been around a while and have their way of doing things. Perhaps it would have been fairer to grandfather in to some degree the veteran coaches who have active coaching styles, as it is unreasonable to expect a coach with Jim Calhoun's experience to be able to change his coaching style overnight, nor should he have to.

I hope Rutecki refs a bunch of Uconn games. calhoun can watchmost of them from his sports bar in Hartford.

Oh, woe is me. Poor Calhoun needs to have rules grandfathered for him.
Maybe he should worry about what his grandchildren would think if they were on the bench listening to him hurling his F-bombs in public during a game while berating his players.
His apologists always bring up the two national championships as an excuse for inexcusable behavior. Think about it. Do you see any other coaches acting the way he does? They may at times yell at their players and single one out, but no one attacks players as Calhoun does. And they play scared because of it.
Did Billy Donovan do it at Florida? Does Terry Francona do it with the Red Sox? Would you want your high school coach doing it with his players?

Coach Calhoun has had a great run at UConn, with awesome results in the win/loss column. However, his act on the sidelines during games has always been embarassing. I've seen him plenty of time live and in person, and it's pretty bad. You don't want young children anywhere near his bench. I don't know how much his antics postively motivate his players. I know there are plenty of players who are looking over their shoulders everytime they miss a shot, or have a turnover, or get scored on ... must be tough on their confidence. Maybe the best of them rise to the top? Or maybe we'll never know how good some of his teams COULD have been with some real positive motivation driving them on.
I glad the rules on decorum are getting tougher.

Calhoun was an absolute embarrassment last night. I don't care that he has 2 National Championships; he carries himself like an immature, intolerant child. He might have two national championships; however, he also has a bench full of players who are not playing even close to their ability because they have a leader who is a master at making talented young men shrink into themselves with insecurity. The University of Connecticut - with its National Championships and all their NBA players - was embarrassed last night. And it wasn't because of their poor rebounding or any of the players, but of the man everybody seems to worship. Jim Calhoun deserved what he got. He is NOT bigger than the game. He's just a bigger...
