Since when were the Spurs poised to be "successors to the NBA throne" to the Lakers? If I'm not mistaken, the Spurs won four championships in the past decade, establishing themselves as today's most dominant pro basketball team. Meanwhile, the Lakers only won three in the same period, the last one coming more than five years ago -- and with the Big Diesel at the helm, no less. If anything, this year's rout of the Spurs means the Lakers are vying to succeed the Spurs. Remember the Lakers' glory years of the 80s? Well, that's history, and so is the 2007-2008 squad. Go Celtics!

anything less than a championship from this year's Lakers will be a failure in my book. the theme of this year's NBA season was "shower kobe with love" (oh, kobe's grown so much as a leader, oh look at how kobe has matured, oh, kobe is the undisputed MVP, etc.)-- but, um, wasn't kobe asking for a one-way ticket out of town not one year ago?

maybe the Lakers' success has little to do with kobe and more to do with the development of Andrew Bynum and the most outrageous heist in NBA trade history in the Pau Gasol deal?(If the Rockets, Warriors, Nuggets or another marginal Western team had stolen Gasol, would they not be instant contenders as well?)

The real question is, can he win ring number 4 with shaq long gone? shaq got his not long after he got shipped to miami. what's the deal, kobe??

Ace - good comments and insight considering coming from a Celtic Fan, but you must agree that when the Celtics beat the Lakers during the regular season the Lakers were not the team they are now, and unfortunately the Celtics have had their ups and downs in the stretch and in the playoffs. Bottom line I think its going to be a hell of a series if Boston can take the first 2 games. If the Lakers get their split the Celtcis are going to be in trouble. Both teams have their strengths for sure but to say Garnett is more athletic than Odum think about it. I'll grant you that Garnett has the edge in experience and smarts for sure. Boston needs their big 3 playing but whoever guards Bryant is going to pay the price offensively. The ultimate difference or major advantage between the two teams is clearly coaching. Doc Rivers has done well but against Phil Jackson ...... need I say more.
Lakers in 5 or 6.
You have brought up really nice points, I do have some responses though:
The lakers are a different team then they were in the regular season, if they were the same they wouldn't have been in the finals, let alone in the conference finals. However, though boston has gone through ups and downs in the playoffs, I think judging by how they played against the pistons (probably the most experienced team in the playoffs--only other team who compares is the spurs) I think the celtics have found their game. I also would say the same after the lakers defeated an extremely talented and experienced team, the spurs. Phil Jackson has a huge edge coaching wise on doc rivers, but I can't decide how much I can count that for. I used to say that coaching really didn't mater it was all the players, coaching is overated....ect. BUT my view has changed, after seeing how badly the celtics played on the road in the first two rounds, I honestly believe thats due to doc rivers not helping them with mental struggles. During game five at the end I think doc made a couple incorrect calls (weather or not to foul up by 3 with 8 seconds left) he also let a 17 point lead slip in the forth quarter (though they did manage to come away with a win. Finally I also think kobe's dettermination can almost be matched by peirce's allen's and garnett's they all really want a ring. It'll will be a battle, but I don't even think the celtics will need seven, they can do it in six.

you took the words right out of my mouth....
really, though, I think that playing away games is influenced so much by 1. the crowd, and 2. just the fact of knowing you aren't in you hometown gets you down about playing somewhere else.....

As a San Antonio Spurs fan I also give credit were credit is due and the Los Angeles Lakers certainly out played the Spurs in their series, however some of you close-minded fans have labeled Manu Ginobili a hater because of the statements he made about the Lakers not being the superior team. Let the record speaks for itself, not until the final games of the season was the West won, which only means there wasn’t any one superior team playing at a higher level than the other Western teams. If fans remember the regular season correctly one loss would place your team (whoever you root for) at the bottom of seeding and one win could propel your team to the very top, therefore the West could have gone to any team. Team record: Lakers (57), New Orleans (56), San Antonio (56), and Utah (54), that how close the West was and I won’t call any one team superior either, would you?

Congratulation to the Lakers in winning the West! Good luck to both the Boston Celtics and Lakers in the finals. Go Spurs Go!!
