Dallas Mavs barely hang on against Orlando Magic

Full story: Orlando Sentinel

The Orlando Magic live and die by the 3-point shot Monday night. The Dallas Mavericks escaped the Magic's long-range artistry in the final seconds.

Once again..no defense. 111 points ? That's not gonna get it done. This will only get worse unless something is done quick. The way it is going now they will probably have a record of 21-20 at the halfway point of the season. Should be a 40 or 42 win season at best. Another mediocre season culminating with another first round exit from the playoffs. This is getting too old too fast.
Basically what you haved now is a team who can score a few more points from now compared to last year. The only problem is they are giving up way more on defense. Either way it all adds up to mediocrity at best. It always has and it always will unless something drastic happens real soon.

Should have kept the team from last year with 1 exception. They should have traded that POS class act G Hill for a player with some value.Instead they lost him to free agency and then spent way to much money on Lewis.

Stan van blew this one with his sub patterns. Dooling was great and helped keep them in the game. At crunch time who does he put in but Nelson who couldnt hit the broad side of a barn . Dwight had a big first quarter and then played part of a ghost as team quit getting him the ball.

Right now the Magic would have trouble holding a J.V. High School team under 110 points.

Brian Schmitz..."Unless Dwight Howard catches a Grant Hill curse or other players wind up getting fitted for walking casts, the Magic should post their best record since the 1995-96 season." Today.."The Orlando Magic live and die by the 3-point shot Monday night." 1) they live and die by the 3 EVERY night..which is part of the problem 2) any fan knows that once opponents start taking you seriously it becomes a different game. Mr. Schmitz was WAY too early with his prediction.

How about moving Turk to PF and Lewsi back to SF, is Lewis really that much of a better rebounder, plus Turk seems stronger even though hes 10 lbs lighter. let Lewis play his natural position and see how it effects his game. Or start Brian Cook at PF and Turk the 6th man, add depth to the bench, and let Lewis play the 3 spot. Though not a good idead for Turk to come off the bench because he is putting together an all star season. Sacrifice, is the word here. Plus the only other option would be to bring Lewis off the bench and thats not going to happen.

Hopefully the Magic can get Ming into foul trouble Wednesday night. Also don't let T-Mac have too big of a game.
But the way they have been playing defense recently I don't know. It is going to be a tough task.
Also if they can hold Houston to under 20 points in the first quarter that would be good too.
What they need is to jump on them early. Give themselves some confidence from the get-go.
It has been a bad trend during this funk them giving up 28, 29, 30 or more points in the first quarter.
Let's set the tone early for a change.

I take it Schmitz doesn't actually watch the Magic before he writes his articles. "Live and die by the three-point shot Monday night". They took 14 threes all night - can't be sure without going back through 25 box scores, but I am 99% certain that is a season low, and the first time I have seen them use a really balanced inside/outside offense this season.

I am not going to worry too much about this defeat. It sucks to lose the way we did, but the Magic were a toe's length from tying the game on Bogans' jumper, and taking Dallas to the last posession on their home court is pretty good. Their record isn't great overall this year, but they are now 11-2 at home - not many teams can expect to go in there and get a W.

It was nice to see Dwight, when they started smothering him, not fold into turnover mode - his passing out was pretty good, it's not often he gets 5 assists. I am still aching to see Rashard Lewis show a bit of selfishness on offense. Every once in a while, it is needed, because if he has a stretch of scoring 8-10 straight points, the opponent's defense will automatically, consciously or not, switch their attention towards him, creating easy opportunities elsewhere. We kind of saw that last night with Dwight, when he opened hot, and Dallas had to concentrate on stopping him, giving up space elsewhere.

Foyle should get some time in the court with Howard in the 4th quarter, two shot blocking rebound vacum cleaners will give the other team one jump shot per trip and zero layups.

right on that's what i say dallas is just better but the other hapless teams, thats who the magic should feast on to get a good record. and then towards the end of the season they are going to comeback to these games the have lost and it will be again could have, should have. but didn't.

Van Gundy keeps lamenting about the defense. What does he expect? Otis Smith has gone out of his way to bring in "shooters" while letting go or passing on defenders. Same problem that drove Brian Hill nuts last year. Did Smith think that Van Gundy could get some defense out of mostly the same guys? Or out of another Garrity named Cook? Rachard Lewis was a good acquisition, but it was foolish to think he was going to bolster the defense. The Magic knew what their problem was, but basically ignored it. So here we are again, moaning about the same things we moaned about last year! I really think it's time to consider letting Otis Smith go. He brings in a good player today, but gets rid of him tomorrow. Can't Smith see beyong his nose? He's gone out of his way to rid the team of defensive minded players. In the final analysis, the only good thing Smith has done is draft Dwight Howard. And even that took a committee vote.

.You gotta be kidding me that some of you dont mind seeing them lose to Dallas. An L is an L no matter who defeats the Magic. It counts the same as the Memphis game. Interesting attitude you people have about winning and losing???

I think the club have many options, specially if they use the guards pressing full cout all the time, and recruiting a seven ft. player (Bonecrusher)who can help Mr. Foyle to protect Mr. Howard (in # 4 pos.), Hedo and Rashard, and also provide the alternative of use Hedo or Rashard in # 2
