Dallas, TX --(Sports Network)- Dirk Nowitzki poured in 32 points, including the game-winning three-pointer with less than a second remaining, and the Dallas Mavericks clinched a playoff berth with a thrilling 97-94 victory over the Utah Jazz.
After a pair of Jason Terry free throws put Dallas on top by three, 94-91, with nine seconds to go, the Jazz got the ball into Deron Williams' hands, and he responded by burying a bucket from beyond the arc, falling to the court as he heaved the shot over the extended reach of Devean George. The trey deadlocked the tilt at 94-94 with five seconds to play.
With no timeouts remaining, the Mavs had to quickly push the ball clear across the court. Eddie Jones fired a bullet of a pass to Nowitzki, who beat the rush of the defense to the other end of the hardwood and spotted up for a three- pointer from the left wing. Nowitzki nailed the long-range jumper with just .9 seconds showing on the clock, restoring the Dallas lead at 97-94.
"Usually you take a time out there and set up a play, and we all knew that we didn't have a timeout left so (Jason) Kidd took it out really quick and got it to Eddie," Nowitzki said. "Eddie did a great job of pushing the ball and making the defense collapse on him, and I was wide open on the wing, and at that point I really didn't know how much time was left, but I knew I had to let it go and I'm happy it went in."
Utah had one last chance, and used a timeout to advance the ball to halfcourt, but Williams was unable to drain another three-pointer, and the Mavericks escaped with the win.
