It`s a tough loss for us . we could had one it if not defensive mistakes at the end. Personally , this team is really old and with the loss of wade , this season is done. Time for heat and riley to rebuild and get rid of the walker, payton, jay williams, etc.... They might make thr playoff but that's it. Think about next season folks. the title is either dallas, phoenix, spurs.

Welp, it's pretty much exactly how everyone feared -- there are lots of good players on this team, but no closer. We also see that there is no one to penetrate, no one to create off the dribble. The Heat basically tried to go to Kapono to replace Wade, but Kapono can't handle, at least not at this level. He tried, but he tried to do too much. And who can blame him -- there was no one else (besides Eddie Jones) to even consider giving the load to. This is where we really could have used Derek Anderson...

And speaking of Eddie Jones -- man, I was instantly reminded why so many of us used to hate so much on such a nice, hard working, team guy. The guy has moves, he can handle, he works his butt off, he plays both ways...he crumbles under the weight of expectations. Crumbles. He never could be the man, and that definitely hasn't changed, nor will it ever in his dwindling time remaining in the game.

And so we are left with a rather motely crew to try to close out a game:

Shaq -- simply can't be counted on down the stretch due to his horrible free throw shooting.

'Zo -- I agree he would have been better to leave in than inserting a cold Shaq atthe end, but was looking real tired at the end (after he had single handedly kept us in the game). He's old (and compared to Curry, undersized).

Payton -- he's running on fumes. Good for a vetran spark for a few minutes, especially when everyone is looking elsewhere, but definitely can not be counted on to be the man

Williams -- a bit erratic as a shooter, not a major defender

Haslem -- a hard working role player, but definitely not "The Man".

Walker - a basketball disaster. When he shoots the three, he'll probably miss. If he drives, he'll get called for fouling. A pass has a good chance of being intercepted. Should not be in as a closer, and if he is, shouldn't be given the ball

Posey - another role player. Probably can't really handle and create his own shot. Can definitely be clutch, but isn't the type to take control of the team

Doleac -- looked good, but was used appropriately (not too much, that is). Can't be a major piece of the puzzle.

Quinn -? We don't know a lot, but should get some of Payton's minutes, I think, just to keep Payton fresh and to get Quinn some experience if needed (Williams knees, et al). Anyway, he ain't gonna be our go to go to finish out the season

Dorell -- athletic but still raw, has trouble closing. Probably deserves more playing time to see if he can contribute something, or, if the season tanks, to get him ready for a bigger role next year

My conclusion -- we're in a bit of a pickle.

My recommendation for the end of games? Close with Payton (keep him fresh before that though), Kapono (he can hit a shot), Posey (an hit a clutch shot), Haslem and Zo. Kapono is a bit of a defensive liabilty, but his shooting would seem essential (and the other guys are pretty strong defensively). Swing the ball around, maybe go inside if it's open, and hopefully Kapono or Posey will be found in position to shoot. If not, Payton isn't afraid to take a shot himself, otherwise, get it in to a big. Zo's not your ideal closer, but he's, even with his own struggles, better at free throws than Shaq. Haslem can hit the boards or be given a midrange shot if everyone else is covered.

Basically, it's not going to be easy to finish .500 though. This could even get a bit ugly...

Oops, that should have said, regarding Walker, "...when he drives, he'll often get called for traveling" (not fouling).

Sorry for all the typos in my post above.

And what's up with that damn Type Key service, or whatever the're calling it now?!!!

Damn, even Ira's blog is injured! I though it was bad when the head coach was out with an injury, but this is getting ridiculous.

The most star-crossed title defense ever.

nobody can handle the ball. Riley has to make some big changes for next season coz this one is over. even if they do go in the playoff, what a early playoff run for nba champions. Heat needs to add help to d wade . kiss tha ring bye bye

They can't even beat the Nicks!
This is the way it's going to be, because they never went out and got a decent player after winning the championship.
They've run Wade into the ground.
Wade shouldnot come back this year, this team is bieng exposed right now and your going to see why. Even the Nicks have two guys who can play.

The most Dominate big man? Bull! This guy can't shoot! He misses easy shots around the basket and can't make free throws,so tell me what the heck good is he? Rebounds and drawing a crowd, wow!
He can't compare himself to the great centers, because of his shooting ability. Age shouldn't affect your shooting,he's just freekin lazy.

It is what is. What can one expect from such an older group with out their # 1 and only option. Wade creates open looks for everyone else. His ability to hit the outside shot and drive to the basket creates looks for everyone. Kapono is not a creater. Jones is no longer a creater. Shaq is no longer the monster he was of a few years ago as he can be played straight up (Malik Rose?). This injury is a blessing in disguise as the Heat will not make the playoffs and they will get a nice draft pick. Do they have a first round draft pick?

Why doesn't Pat Riley use Dorrell Wright as the defensive stopper like the Spurs use Bruce Bowen? Dorrell is young, athletic, and is active around the boards. Pat Riley seems to have no interest in letting Dorrell play at all anymore. If you look at the Heat lineup, other than Dwayne Wade, we will be the worst team in basketball for the next 10 years unless Riley starts looking towards the future.

The Heat are done. At this point it would be better to take our chance in the lottery. At some point Riley is going to have to allow the younger players to play. You can not come back next year with another old ass tired team. the sad part is I think they signed Walker for to many years. They won't be able to give him away. Payton should be gone and Posey will also likely be gone. This owner better get with paying a luxury tax. Unless he does that next year will be another lost year!

GREG ODEN
Being here in Buckeyes mad Columbus, OH area, I see Greg Oden play every game. I agree with you he would be a fantastic catch for the Heat. He plays with composure, heart and not a little talent. He is also a really great guy from a personality perspective.

Personally, I hope he stays with Ohio State one more season. Not just to see the Buckeyes win it all next year (don't think they will do it this year - they are overrated by far at No. 1) but I think an extra year at the college level to mature and get over his right hand injury will make him a far better player for the NBA.

I agree completely! Even in single star player basketball it is folly to rely completely on just one player. Look at the Suns when they lost Nash for a brief period.

Scrap this season and look to regroup with a young and hungry bunch for next year. See if we can get Greg Oden if he enters the draft this year.

Why the heck does Riley keep playing Walker? Numbers don't lie--he is awful shooting and can't defend! And what is up with Riley not playing Wright? The kid has talent and he is much more productive than stupid Antoine!!!!
